Title: Some fish out of one of my ponds
Post by: taxid on Jun 02, 2012, 12:37 AM
The person in the pictures is a friend that manages ponds for a living (I prefer to only manage my own ponds), and helped me catch 20 smallmouth for one of his clients.

I didn't measure it but I think it was about 10 inches on a board. My gills are already a pound at 9.5 inches due to heavy feeding on artificial feed once a day to satiation.

Thank you. It's a lot more work than many realize.

To produce trophy size panfish the idea is to reproduce the bluegills and yellow perch in another pond and to only plant male bluegill and female yellow perch in this pond and feed them well on artificial feed. One of a couple ways to produce trophy size bluegill and yellow perch. The other way is to feed an artificial diet along with a large population of small largemouth bass to keep their numbers down.

Unfortunately I had some female bluegill escape the cage they were held in due to some ice thawing and pushing up against the cage which tipped part of it under water. I also dropped a male perch in the pond accidentally when sexing my YOY perch. Now I have unwanted reproduction and it's just a matter of time before I have too many smaller fish and less than optimum growth rates. Since I don't have largemouth in the pond it's difficult to control the numbers, and smallmouth by themselves aren't good at controlling bluegills. I no longer raise largemouths for several reasons but one is they push the other species away from the pellets.

This fall I will be draining the pond for the third time and temporarily moving the fish to two smaller ponds until it's rotenoned or limed, it's filled back up, and it's safe to move the fish back in. This time there will be no cages for fish to get loose. Maybe I'll get it right the third time!

Nice to see a man with a great passion. Mine is deer hunting. My cousin just bought 80 acres to sometime develop. I have 100% of hunting rights. I love to fish but bow hunting gets my blood pumping. I almost forgot those are some dandy fish u have.

Are you into QDM? I know people that try but their neighbors shoot any buck that moves and refuse to shoot does so it kind of negates things.

Quality Deer Management?  Is that anything like the 'if it's brown its down' plan used by some people?   ::) :rotflol: :rotflol:

Nope just the opposite when it comes to bucks. You let them live a few years to get to trophy proportions but thin out the does.

I do let the small bucks walk. I try and get a nice doe first thing. I like messing with the small bucks to see how they react to a doe bleet, rattling ect. I use a climber all the time to stay mobil and not scent up.one are of the woods to much and it helps so deer cannot pattern u as well. I try and keep it simple and.not.over think stuff to much. I get up about 20-22 ft if i can.

I'd rather not say as it's not just a fishing pond; it's part of my taxidermy business and provides additional income selling frozen fish to taxidermists as far away as Hawaii.

There are unscrupulous people out there that would be in danger from my 110 lb. Akita or 12 gauge.    ;D

Not referring to you of course.  ;)

We call that natural selection!!!!    Good exercise for the dog and free target practice for you!!

Why do you sell fish to taxidermists?  For people that just want to buy a big mounted fish and not catch it?

Why do you sell fish to taxidermists?  For people that just want to buy a big mounted fish and not catch it?

For two reasons:

1.) It's illegal to sell fish out of public waters in most states (some exceptions).

2.) Trophy fish for showrooms, competitions, taxidermy schools, and fish replica makers are not a guaranteed catch as we all know.

I'm losing some of my biggest  perch to the heat. They're a coolwater fish and the largest ones have trouble with warm water (upper 80's) They're originally from Lake Erie 30 + generations ago so they are not all adapted to a tepid pond.

Sorry to hear that taxid. You would think that someone would invent some type of water cooler. They make heaters, why not coolers?

Sorry to hear that taxid. You would think that someone would invent some type of water cooler. They make heaters, why not coolers?

They do; they are called chillers but they are not cost effective for a million gallon pond. I used to have an underground line from my aquaculture well to run directly to this pond which would cool things down about 10 degrees but it's blocked for some reason. However it's only three fish so far out of a couple hundred so I may be O.K. Even if I could pump well water directly to this pond I'm not sure I would.

When I had trout (don't have trout in the trout pond this year) it would overflow into this pond and keep it about 10 degrees cooler.
