Title: camo_fish 2013 pictures - Shenandoah River, Luray, VA - page 2
Post by: camo_fish on Jun 24, 2013, 11:38 PM
Saturday, June 22nd, Cloudy Super Full Moon 2013 = Awesome top water fish'n.

This was my son's 1st time going out late on the lake with me up at camp. I let him choose black or red/white jitterbug, so he took black and I, red/white. We also threw some crankbaits with a few smallies and rockies also caught. It started out with a little rain right before sunset, but was all good, done rain'n when we got to our 1st spot. This 1st smallie was on the crankbait. My son said, "How will I know when I get a fish, it feels like a fish as I'm reel'n in?" I told him it will jerk back and then, "Oh oh I got one."  ;D

So I get on too.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_03a_zpsf039e696.jpg&hash=18abbe60ac287505ddc04fe5f4358895) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_03a_zpsf039e696.jpg.html)
Then the super moon comes out for a peeky see.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_moon04a_zps54e2302a.jpg&hash=4357c8838e7c006a4e543828656ba69f) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_moon04a_zps54e2302a.jpg.html)
And out on the end of the point, we get a well pleasing double.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_04a_zps2140f651.jpg&hash=21fffa39ac0cd52a8cb0707acf0c9213) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_04a_zps2140f651.jpg.html)
Then it was about 11pm, so time for a snack break and call mom for good night and then over to the honey hole shoreline and point.  ;)
He was pooped and taking a break after the short run and me starting to fish. After about the 3rd fish, he was right back up in the seat beating the banks again, lol.  :D

Some real nice smallies off the top water jitterbug'n.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_08bb_zps8a164807.jpg&hash=211dc6ece20a3f4c9896155ce070832a) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_08bb_zps8a164807.jpg.html)
Finally figured out reel and stop, reel and stop, even had one take the jitterbug without even making a sound, it was awesome!!
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_09aa_zps717c49da.jpg&hash=f7f050a7d906f1227cfd45dd28dc0d0f) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_09aa_zps717c49da.jpg.html)
And I even caught a nice one too, wink, wink!
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F062213_10aa_zpsea12afcb.jpg&hash=6e8c7805591faf122fa76c5357a5ebf0) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/062213_10aa_zpsea12afcb.jpg.html)
And finally a few more moon shots at the end of the night about 1am.

used to plug for big mouths all the time, night only after 9 pm til midnight was good. Cant beat the excitement, black jitterbug was our favorite ! Good to see a youngster keeping the tradition going

The more time a boy and his dad spend on the water, the more they have in common and the more opportunities there are to talk along the way.
"Oh oh I got one"...........Such a precious expression!!!!!!

Thanks guys, yea the lake up at camp is awesome at night, no one normally around, got the whole lake to ourselves and lots of memories for sure at night in the boat with my father as a young boy, too. And I have to say he started off with only 1 slight tree hunter. He was funny, "Ah, dad it landed in the tree, sorry?", I reply, "Yank it once real hard.", "It came out!!", "that is great and remember, it won't be your last time in the trees."   ;D  ;D

It's so fun what you guys did... my buddy and I were out the other night hoping for a late night trip, but t-storms chased us off the water.  What a great set of pics, and glad to see your son having such a good time, and you too.  I'm sure he'll never forget that night.  Way to go Dad!

Thanks for sharing, glad to see those fishing pics of yours again!

We want pics!!!!!  How did your trip go?
nothing real big, lots of river perch and smallies and a few channel cats, bummer no carp, wife really wanted to tangle with a carp this year, but plenty of little ones to keep the interest. Pictures are off the camera and sitting on the computer, just no time right now to go thru them. Hope to get to come vacation pictures here in the next few weeks.  ;D

Ok, on vacation this year we went back to my childhood river bank to camp out for a whole week with family and friends.
July 19 - 27, 2013 @ the Ruffner's Campground on the Shenandoah River just north from Luray, VA.
Had a high school friend come spend a night with us on the river back from outside of DC.
The fish'n was hard with 100% artificial, but got a few on the lite jigheads and 2" twisters, plus the river was about 1 foot higher then normal.

Once my father got there on Sunday we were able to seine for hellgrammites then it was fish on!
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F072113_01a_zps7e41edfe.jpg&hash=10638a4f46c66182c14f015f8d784b62) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/072113_01a_zps7e41edfe.jpg.html)
Was able to get enough for a few days, but we had to seine a 2nd time mid week so we could get back into them Thursday and Friday.

It was great to have my wife in front of the canoe catching tons of fish.
In the background is camp up on the bank and everyone getting ready to go out fish'n and catch'n some nice fish of the big rock (left side), also a great swimming hole.

Back out in the canoe with wife and son catch'n up a storm of fish, hellgrammites are the #1 bait when it comes to catch'n fish on the river. Everything eats them and it's like dangling a chunk of meat into front of a tiger.

thanks guys!!

Here is part 2 and the last of our Shenandoah River, Luray, VA trip....

With the last day to fish, I was able to get my wife out for a quiet afternoon to hunt down a big carp for her. Unfortunetly we went able to get her hooked up with any, but we saw a few, just couldn't get them to hit. With a few dozen hellgramites we had a great day of fishing. First we had to put a few gills on the stringer to cut up for some catfish bait. So we floated down the river, anchoring and fishing as we went, bouncing from hole to hole, catching tons of fish, this is how it went.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F072513_01a_zpsa4a3e616.jpg&hash=fd0779b4a83c344d92515c77b7ebee80) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/072513_01a_zpsa4a3e616.jpg.html)

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F072513_02a_zps680f80fc.jpg&hash=1148d22f78d2356e0ac31a5a54737aae) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/072513_02a_zps680f80fc.jpg.html)
A few gills for the stringer.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F072513_03a_zps7075679c.jpg&hash=50824758b90e3d3cc2eb4f34eb2f77b7) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/072513_03a_zps7075679c.jpg.html)

We let the chubs go, lol, these river catfish will eat gills first, then chubs and smallies last, lol, just seems to be the way it is.  ;D
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv17%2Fcamofish%2F2013%2520Open%2F072513_04a_zps19ab773c.jpg&hash=289020f43c4f49a4b51649301784e0a5) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/camofish/media/2013%20Open/072513_04a_zps19ab773c.jpg.html)

So we headed down just below that log jam, anchored up in the shade and had several carp feeding and swimming around. Just couldn't get them to eat our hellgramites, the gills and chubs just rushed right in there. I cut up a gill and baited up a rod for each of us to toss out and lay in the canoe with loosened drags and one foot on the butt of the rods in the canoe so we won't loose them if our baits were hit and run if a need for speed catfish, lol. The other rod in hand we kept throwing our hellgramites looking for anything to bite and were catching fish left and right.
After several runs, I was finally able to hook up with a nice catfish and with a great netting job from my wife, was able to boat it for photo.
