How far south till I start seeing open water ? :-\

The 3 Upper Wabash Reservoirs are way up. Roush   + 20.6 feet,   Salamonie   +18.1 feet, Mississinewa  + 17.4 feet.  That is from the winter pool. With the forecast for more rain I do not see them getting back to winter pool or refreezing. The fish will be moving upstream and boat and shore fishing will be improving as the water clears. Already made 2 quarts of maple syrup. Hope to have a gallon canned before the crappie bite.

Curious as to what is the ratio? About 12 or 15 to 1?

Isn't the ratio more like 40:1 for syrup?

I did not realize sap was already running.

The ratio of sap to syrup is  about 40 gal sap to 1 gal syrup. That varies with the type of maple. I do cheat a little by putting the sap in plastic milk jugs and freezing them overnight. As you all know the water will freeze but not the sugar. So I punch a hole in ice and pour the unfrozen solution, which will have about 90% of the sugar in the kettle and throw the ice water away. I boil it on the side burner of my gas grill. Do not try this in the house unless you like sticky ceilings!  Now you end op boiling about 25 gal of concentrated sap. The Belgium waffles were awesome today!

Syrup making is a great way to kill the time between ice and open water. I like doing a few outdoor chores while I boil down the sap over my fire pit.
