I've been looking at pictures of trout and salmon caught in New Zealand and Patigonia like this one (You can't accuse the young lady of pushing it into the camera lens.) Anyway, found a round trip air fare in from O'Hare in Chicago for $1500.00. New Zealand is on my bucket list and this make it sound more attainable me. I assumed it would be much more than that.
Of course there would be expenses while there but...
A friend that doesn't even fish took a trip to New Zealand. Says he could easily live there! Said just the scenery was breathtaking and not very populated.

A young Lady that my wife and I used to hike with found a job there, moved and never came back. She has a masters in chemistry, the jobs were there and the hiking too. She had a lot of good things to say about the people and the place. I'd say go for it if you can!

It's not the price of the flight that puts me off, it's the 22 hours of flight time. NOPE! No thank you.

I'm willing to do that to experience a different part of the world and great fishing. People used to ride on boats for days and days. I don't mind flying that much.

Yeah, but at least you can fish off a boat! ;D ;D ;D

I'm HORRIFIED of flying but I do it when I must. Any flight that is longer than 10 hours starts to be a pretty severe problem for me.
I like the boat idea.

18 yrs back, at a previous job, I travelled all over the world for 25 yrs.
In the early years it was fun.
Then it got old.
I'm not afraid to fly.
Just prefer not to fly if I don't have to.
Too much BS these days because of those cornballs that attacked the Towers.
Sometimes you simply have to fly.
But sometimes you don't.

Isn't it amazing how the good people always suffer?

Too far for big trout. You can do that in the states. Have friends that have been. Id go but it would be to cast for yellowfin tuna from shore...

That's true and no clue if I will really go at some point. Just was surprised the airfare wasn't twice that much.
That said the Great Lakes out this way are not what they used to be by a long shot. Use to be the place to go for oversized salmonids. Now it's really hit and miss. Michigan north of me isn't even stocking many brown trout with only one inland lake planted with browns. I really miss the 70's and 80's. Used to be quite a sight to look down into the water off of one dam where I studied fisheries science. Browns as big as salmon and 30 pound salmon were quite common.

Ontario browns have my interest for fall/early winter.
Filet that exchange rate is worth noting. That makes things very expensive.

You should note that Quantas Airline has the best record for air travel.

Jethro I used to be horrified as a kid now I hop on planes all the time for work. Funny thing is my dad's friend owned a Cessna and a Piper. Being that my old man and his buddy were both aircraft mechanics we spent a TON of time in either flying over CT. Small planes to me ARE horrifying but it wouldn't stop me.
