Any know about these. Cleaning out my grandfathers tackle box and found these.

They used to call them "cow bells".
For trolling lakers, but smaller ones can be used for walleye and pike.
The inline weights on a couple help to get them down deep.
-
Thanks Mac. The larger ones say Seneca on them so I thought maybe Lakers. I thought he fished pike in Oneida mostly but he must have gotten around. Would these dat back to 40's-50's?

Could be that old.
I fished with that stuff in the 60’s and 70’s. A little in the early 80’s.

That's a beautiful display for sure.
-
We trolled cow bells in rivers and lakes for years. I still see them being used on Winnipesaukee, Squam, etc.
They produced plenty of fish.
Nice collection

are those inline weights or floats to keep it off the bottom ? i have some old ones like that and i trolled with them off of riggers in cayuga but didn't work as well as the newer rigs
-
They are floats. Largest blade is 4"
-
I have a few cowbells still in the original packages from the 70s

Great display! I fished "Cow Bells" in the 40's and 50's. The short ones. They do work but I hate to troll. My buddy use to say lots of guys die while trolling! They fall asleep, fall over board and drown!

I walked into a bait store once back in the 80's asking if they had cowbells. I got a look like I was crazy and "why would we have cowbells in a bait store?" I had to explain to them what they actually were.

My wife says trolling is not really fishing.

My wife says trolling is not really fishing.
I would tend to agree with your wife, but trolling with the right lure in the right place comes close!

I can't remember the last time I trolled a plug of any kind, have trolled spinners once in the past 5/6 years. It has been jigs. I do have some old wooden plugs, mostly Creek Chub's.....h2l
-
I do troll spinners for walleyes can be very effective at times. I have started to jig for them and have had good success. H2l the walleye whisperer has taught me a lot.
-
When I was a kid, we used to troll for walleyes on Lake Champlain using June Bug Spinners with night crawlers. It was deadly back then.
-
I still have a few June bug spinners, tried them last year with no luck. Maybe there were no fish around when I tried them.
-
Old Muskie spinners. Won't use them. Afraid to lose them!

I like what you did with those spinners catfisher. I have inherited some of my grandpa's old lures, thanks for the idea!
-
Everyone used the june bug spinner with a nightcrawler on Erie during the 60s and 70s. To keep it just off bottom they used chugging irons. During that time the june bug spinner was modified by adding a yellow sally with a night crawler. If you caught a walleye that weighed 6 pounds you got your picture in the paper.

Caught these last August with hand tied spinners and 5 oz chugging irons. I love fishing old school.
