Title: Bladebaits
Post by: Mackdaddy21 on Aug 22, 2005, 12:26 AM
How many of you use bladebaits for walleyes, like a Heddon Sonar or Reef Runner Cicada? I love there action on the retrieve and snapping them back in.

Blades are and can be an excellent fall bait for Eyes on dropoffs and when they are in any concentrations in persuit of bait.
A sharp lift then with a drop of your rod tip, watch the line and wait for that twitch....sometimes its as soft as a leaf turning off your line, to as violent as a gut wrenching slam thats sure to get your adrenaline pumping.
Watch your sonar, find that drop-off with concentrations of arches and drop one to them, all the while watching the line for that tell tale twitch....let it rest on bottom for a few moments [ anywhere from a few seconds to a full minute ] then rip it back up and watch the drop again.
You can sweeten the bait up with a nightcrawler head, or pinch off 1/2 a small minnow and attach it to your front hook and under the right conditions the action can be fast and furious.
Another presentation I use is a sharp lift and follow witha taut line down presentation, keeping the bait 30 to 40 foot out from the boat on a drift in 15 to 25 fow with a steady wind  up around 15 to 25 mph...you'll cover plenty of territory and find that the added vibration pulls fish in from a significant distance.
unless  ice fishing for panfish there really isnt any reason to use a blade under 3/8's oz.  I start with 1/2 to 3/4 in water over 30 foot deep in order to get a straight drop to the fish unless I'm drifting.
Vibe-E's, Sonars , Cicadas and an old favorite a Blitz Blade will give you variations in actions, and different vibrations to help you dial in to what Mr. Walleye is taking on any given day.
In the fall, dont leave home without them. ;)

Very interesting... Good post, Rogue. Thanks!
I have a few blades, but I haven't really used them much.
I'll have to experiment a little this Fall.

In my only local walleye lake I am limited to fishing from shore because of a glut of stupid regulations. I like throwing the blades because they cast far, sink fast, and have a good action. There are no pelagic baitfish in the lake, but the blades will imitate the young of the year bass and panfish the walleye feed on, as well as crawfish.
I am sure in lakes with silvery baitfish they would be a great lure to vertically jig.

I bought a few of the RR Cicada's. I cant get use to them. They are so small and light but they  just buzz thru the water and cast like a shot. No luck yet but I keep trying.

they must be popular there are a few colours that the BPS is always sold out of

I don't use them, only have 1 old blade bait in my ice fishing box, and it's too heavy, ...but....  I had an old Infisherman mag I found somewhere....it was the year after the Cicada came out.  Lindner was really excited about it.  This guy showed up at a sports show where Infisherman had a tank of bass set up.  Al thinks, oh gee here comes another one.  He said he's seen too many fellas pawn their home and car trying to break into the tackle business and he wasn't looking forward to telling him to go home and find something else to do besides waste his money developing a product for an already sated market.  Then they dropped the cicada in the tank.  The fish, which were jaded old sport show veterans, you know... seen every hook, bait-wise, hard to catch, and I believe just been fed to boot, went into a frenzy and churned the water up trying to get at this new thing.  A glowing recommendation if I've ever read one.  A friend at the lake who has trouble catching fish at the best of times bought some, and he caught on them!

What size does everyone like? do you like to go with the largest, smallest or in-between the two. I also have one and have really never gave it a chance, it's one of the smaller models, might have to give it a shot this year. ;D

If it's in the 1/8 - 3/16 oz range it'd probably be good for ice fishing.

I like 1/4 - 3/8 ounce. They are compact yet cast a mile and put out bigtime attraction. Trout, bass, and pike will also slam them.

I like a gold or silver - blue color. Perch colors also work good because they more resemble a small perch, sunfish, or bass that walleye and other gamefish eat. Silver blue more have the flash and look of a small trout.

Do you guys attach the bladebaits directly to your line or use a snap swivel?  I have a few of them but have never tried one....might give them a shot this summer for walleyes.

Hey read this friday and thought about it. Went out saturday night and marked plenty of suspended fish, trolled by em, jigged them no takers. Put on a yellow and black balde and hit three yellows, two shorts and one keeper.
Also lost the lure on a fish and did not have another.
Fished with a jigging spoon from this winter and hit only rock bass after that. Will be out again with some more blade baits in different sizes and colors.

I use them but i bought the do it mold and i pour my own. Use them more like a jig than a cast and retrieve lure

I know I'm replying to an old post, but....

Blade baits DO WORK WELL any season for walleyes.
I use them jigging in the winter, too.
Use a snap to attach to your line and your good to go.

Another lure that works about as well as a blade bait is a lip less crank bait.
they are shaped like a blade bait and have the same action and rattle to boot.
Bill Lewis' rattle trap is an example.
