Title: CORMORANTS
Post by: WOLF1964 on Mar 29, 2006, 02:03 PM
SO HOWS THE CORMORANTS AROUND THE WORLD DOING? THEY HAVE GROUPS GOING AROUND HERE KEEPING THE CONTROL ON THEM. SEEMS TO BE 2 PEOPEL PER BOAT. ONE DRIVER AND ONE SHOOTER. THOSES BIRDS CAN REALLY MESS UP A GOOD FISHING LAKE. ITS ABOUT TIME WE STARTED TO CONTROL THEM.

GLEN..

NORTHERN MICHIGAN HERE. ALPENA AREA

I wish these birds were on the endangered species list or extinct.  Here on Irondequoit Bay (Rochester NY), the population has exploded the past five years.  They are killing off trees all over the South end of the bay.

THEY WILL EAT ALL THE BAIT FISH IN A LAKE AND THEN YOUR PERCH AND WALLY'S WILL NOT HAVE ANY FOOD. PLUS THE WILL IT THE YOUNG PERCH AND WALLY'S.....    THEY NEED TO BE GONE.

they're federaly protected everywhere...but there out of control....we were surf fishing for browns in lake michigan last year...and a flock so large flew over..that we had to duck for cover from all the poop falling...my green hat was white by the end of the day.

NOT SURE HOW FEDERALLY THERE PROTECTED IF WERE ALLOWED TO SHOOT THEM OFF HERE ??? THIS IS A QUOTE FROM OUR NEWS LETTER WE RECEIVE "THESE WILL BE SHORT MEETINGS, BUT WILL ACCOMPLISH A LOT TOWARD MAINTAINING THE BALANCE BETWEEN CORMORANTS AND FISH IN THE LAKES. VERY VERY IMPORTANT TO ATTEND. THE PURPOSE OF THESE MEETING IS TO SIGN UP PEOPLE WITH BOATS AND TIME, TO GO OUT IN THE WATER AS SOON AS THE ICE MELTS, TO DO CORMORANTS CONTROL. THERE WILL TYPICALLY BE TWO PEOPLE TO A BOAT, A DRIVER AND A SHOOTER. THE PROGRAM LASTS ABOUT A MONTH, BUT THE EFFECTS LAST ALL YEAR. WE NEED TO GET THESE BIRDS OFF THE SPAWNING BEDS, AND REALLY, OFF THE LAKES. WE NEED YOUR HELP, THE MORE THE BETTER BECAUSE  THE MORE WE HAVE, THE LESS EACH PERSON HAS TO SACRIFICE THEIR TIME." SO I'M NOT SURE IF IT'S JUST SOMETHING WE'RE DOING OR WHAT..BUT IT WORKED LAST YEAR PREETY GOOD.

That sounds like a blast, heck I'd pay to do that!  Shoot a couple extra for us, because we're not allowed to give them a dirty look.

In Washington they are bad.  In trout stocked lakes it is like they know when the trucks arrive I have seen them fly onto the lake and eat so much fish that they couldnt fly.  Also they eat alot of Steelhead and Salmon smolts in the rivers.  I say kill them all.

Filthy stupid birds.  :cursing: I'd quit my job and travel the country killing them if the opportunity arose. I hate them like eyedoctor and Slipbob hate Bass!!

Hey NYerts just hope the canadians ok some steps to control their numbers. From something I read they will start or have started doing something to their eggs (DEC).

I have some extra 3 inch # 4 that would probably work just fine for em.
Wait boys till they get closer, TAKE EM, pop up and WACK em!

They're federally protected everywhere.  Could someone please explain why these birds have gained such a status?

Hope you never get them down your way..all they do is eat, crap and breed....probably all at the same time if you watch them long enough....I see "research" has shown that we've got the biggest population of them right in my backyard, relatively speaking, out on Galloo Island...if you can get google earth...you can find this island and then picture 11,600 of these birds on this small island.

My shoulder would take about 100 12 gauge shells a day...would be glad to spend the gas to get out there and do my share..we need to have a comorant day like they have a crow day down in Auburn....

A half stick in a three lb coffee can surrounded by pea gravel sure would put a dent in their population. ;D ;)

You'll never get rid of these water rats. For years a man on the island had a federal permit to shoot them. His name was Robert Joyce and it was like a mongoose on a cobra, he shot every one that was in range. It never put a dent in the population. When he died, a flock of shags flew over as we put him in the ground. The state would release hundreds of salmon smolts in the Union River at $5.00 a smolt and maybe 10% would make it to open water. In a couple of weeks, the rocks will be covered with these shags eating up the smelts and alwives that are spawning. The only thing that might clean them out would be the bird flu. Until then, the skies will be full of them as they migrate. Ask a fish farmer how he likes them.

I was talking about the day where they all get together and run townwide (or on the outskirts) bagging them (literally) for a count at the end of the day..Esox

as my name implies im actually a pretty big waterfowl hunter...and i must be honest..even though they are protected....ive "mistaken" lol a few for ducks...and they are suprizingly tough little bassterds...they fall out of the sky good enough..but out of a quite a few "accidental shots" on commorants..i dont think ive ever seen one straight out fold up and die...and i think im a good shot and ive got great equipment...

someone said above about canada controls..i belive the province of manitoba is killing off a whole bunch..they got really bad on lake winnipeg..worse then theyve gotten on the great lakes...so maybe thats a start

They used to oil a bunch of the eggs out on Galloo Island...not sure if they still do or not...I don't know if they oiled all the nests or not...they should if they didn't...

I don't bird hunt anymore..but I can see how you could mistake a comorant for a duck...LOL!!!!

If a shotgun doesn't do the trick.  Then I'm sure a 30-06 will.  Good target practice.  Set up a 100 yards out and pick em off as they sit in the tree.   Add some sport to it anyway.

I'm sure buckshot would kill em too.  000 to the head full choke.

I also like the idea of dynamite with a coffee can full of shrapnel.

I hate them like eyedoctor and Slipbob hate Bass!!

:D   Me and eyedoktr are secretly working on some "genetically modified" cormorants that ONLY eat Bass  ;D

That should at least turn the Cormorants into a tastier bird ;D
