Title: bass and crappie palooza started today
Post by: fishogger on May 18, 2019, 03:53 PM
last year I hit this small public lake and did real good on the keeper size bass.  I was pulling a limit every morning in a couple hours with the old buzzbait.  I believe I bagged up 43 or so bass from 14-17" from that lake.  when the limits started to take longer than 4 hours I stopped.  well its on fire again this year!  cuz called me yesterday and wonderd if I wanted to wet a line.  I said I was thinking about hitting _______ lake again for the fillet fest.  he said that sounded good to him.  we hit he water around 6 am and was into them instantly!  we both tossed buzzbaits to the shores edge.  I think we boxed 4 bass before we caught one too small to keep.  by 8am we were limited out on bass in the box. 3 of them around the 16-17" mark. the rest 14-15s.  we switched to crappie scouting after that.  there were some on the beds but very sporadic.  cuz pulled the biggest a black male a tad over 13".  sun was beating down by 10 and we called it a morning with a fist bump. lol

gota love those buzzbaits!!

 crappie very dark.

Baked bass, we eat it!  I don't knock the crap out of them like that but don't target them either.  Too many in several lakes it seems IMO.

not taunting anyone on purpose taxi.  just reporting a killer bite/trip.  like I said this lake just keeps pumping them out.

speaking of bass fishing.  has anyone been past/fished blue lake to see if that article in Indiana game and fish has filled the ramp? been meaning to give "bass heaven" a try but working way too much. lol
Title: Re: bass palooza started today
Post by: fishogger on May 19, 2019, 04:20 AM
agreed, bass eat fine if they aren't too big roe.  I stop at 17-18".

some people eat even the big ones.  there is a bridge between 2 lakes I used to cruise threw.  there was a local kid that sat there a lot catching bass.  he used a crawler on the bottom like catfishing.  many times he showed me his stringer full of 3-7# bass.  he did this all summer long and that lakes still gives up major league bass fishing.  its hard to get to with a bass boat though.  if the lakes are fertile they can take a pounding and still produce.  I only target those lakes for that reason. im not out to eradicate bass where the population is low.  when the limits get harder to come by I move on to the next lake.  most smaller lakes, that takes a dozen trips or more.

Parking was great this morning, I got front row. The weather on the other hand was less desirable. Chilly & Rainy. Managed to subdue 2 Bass and by accident come upon a school of suspended crappie. Was tying on a RoadRunner on my ultra light and locator lit up. Crappies schooled up around sunken stumps 15 f.o.w.

smoked those two bass today.  that was a first for me.  they turned out pretty good. I thought mite it would be "bassy", but it wasn't at all.  I rubbed them the day before and put in fridge.  before I put them in the smoker, I brushed them with duck fat.  I also smoked two ducks after the bass. those I brine for at least 24 hours. spent the afternoon playing with the smoker and grill.  had to grill some wings for the wife.  she not much on smoky things. fun day for me plus super munchies for the next couple days!

killers? oh now! lmao  shoot we released around 20 yesterday.  no shortage of in that lake for sure. harvest some "mid sizers" and release the hogs.  not like we are removing hundreds of big bass from public waters  not easy to get back into that lake but well worth it. huge matt of moss gets around this lake, so its frog territory.  that has to be some of the most entertaining fishing there is!  watching them move under the matt going for you bait,  busting threw and missing a couple times before they finally get it.  I had one on for a bit that popped off, then it ran the bait down again and got it once more! had to release that one just for the show it put on. lmao

water was 71 when we pulled out. bass on beds and the carp starting to thrash in the shallows. summer is nipping at our heels.  get up and hit that sunrise top water bite with a youngster this weekend!

Well Fishogger and I agreed to hit Blue Lake since there was a big "hoopla article" about the good fishing there. Well parking was not a problem, Fishing on the other hand different story. Either the fish slept in or I have reason to believe that article was misinforming. Did manage to scrape up a few Bass to put in livewell, but fell extremely short to my "Honey Holes". Nothing to brag about just nice eater size.

Good work Hoggers, those are some nice bass; you guys have been doing real well here lately!

Iíve been wondering the same thing about Blue as you guys since that article was published, but havenít had much luck getting on the water here lately.
You donít happen to remember what the water temp was this morning do ya?

Happy eating!

You know I'm just messing with you. You can have all those green carp you want. I'd rather fish for panfish or on vacation big trout in Maine.

Wait until I have 5 to 6 pound porker bass in the pond in a few years.

had a short day today so I called HFH to see what he was into.  the weather was perfect for some top water action I suggested.  so we met up and hit a small private lake we have fished most of our lives. im one of the few that still hold a gate key.  frogs and buzzbaits were on my 2 poles.  the fish were full of spunk and we caught 3 before we even turned over the boats. lol we split up and covered that lake good for about 3.5 hours at mid day.  I caught and released around 40 bass in that time. the biggest was maybe 4.5pounds.  HFH was into them the same when I lost track of him.  when we met bac up at the dock he said he got into a school of crappie and pulled about 30 or so on a roadrunner. which he showed me had no plastic left on it! but he was still catching them with it. lol

I only took a couple pics with the flip phone.

Looks like a good day to me!

one of the owners is in the presses of making a fish camp out there.

we hit it again last night for a couple hours. had a lot of missed strikes threw the weed matts and unbuttons while stuck in the matts, but still fun just the same.  didn't count but guessing I brought to hand maybe 14 and had more than that in miss strikes and/or fish that came off. all on top waters.  even at mid day in bright sun.  gota love those explosions!  had two hit rite by the boat and drench me.  also each trip has ruined a $1 buzz bait from wallyworld. one worn-out the second was broken off by something.  I got tired of wrenching fish out of weed matts and switched to crappie for the last hour.

Fishogger it was another awesome venture. Though the numbers were a little lower than normal for us it was fun. Boated 18 Bass on Frogs or Buzzbait. Missed about the same amount trying to pull fish through the thick matt of vegetation.

HFH, you forget to mention it all took place on a 3hour trip! also it was midday 1-4pm!  I thought the wind would kill the top water bite but not the case.  they wer hitting with gusto!  most mine came on a frog because I was fishing moss matts mostly.  a few on buzz bait when I got to an open pocket. 3 hours is about all my arms can take of winching bass from that cabbage. lol
tried the crappie again before we went in but the wind had them shut down completely.

We did to manage a 2 man limit but it took over 6 hours to do it. Not real impressed with this lake. Bass or Crappie. My shoulders need a rest anyway. From yesterdays Bass Blast!!

Fishogger I think your "crystal ball" was abit foggy this morning. The first lake we hit was like creamed coffee. But since you rubbed your ball and led us to another lake I had faith. We hit it hard both top water and jig-n-pig style. Caught mostly short ones. Largemouth & smallies. Even had a few crappie and gills in the mix. All and all was not too bad of day. Was educational for sure.

shoot, I didn't even see you catch that gill HFH! lol  I must have been working on the backlash from hell.  I lost that spool by the way. spent half hour on it tonight then got out he side cutters. >:(  its re-spooled and ready to terrorize in the morning if rain holds off.

several lakes were up enough to make the pads disappear up around angola!  golden lake ramp was the worst. it didn't even have a parking lot, it was up so high. lol  crooked wasn't too bad but it was up also.  the fish bit good at crooked till that sun started to blaze.  it was out off the drop after that.  ramp was full when we pulled out at noon30.

ill polish and rain-x that crystal ball for next trip I promise.  :D  that 2" of rain messed it up for sure.

Well it had been almost 14 hrs since my last fix so I kidnapped Fishogger and hit our 'secret, secret hole this morning. On the water at 0755 off the water at 1110. I boated 38 Bass and FH about the same. Maybe 1 or 2 less.

nope, I only had maybe 25-30 come to hand.  lost several in the moss beds. buzz baits and frogs in the wind.  had a 5 pounder go nuts nest to boat and cover me with pond weed moss and other stuff that didn't taste good.  lol  she soaked my shirt by the time I got her landed.  non stop action for 3 hours!  I started with first and second casts scoring with matching 4 pounders. I took couple pics of the bigger ones ill post later.

so far the x5 line has proven worthy of the swamp basses.  unfortunately a pike bit off a buzzer yesterday.  cant ask it to hold up to that though.  I have pushed it to the limits for sure, this season, with no complaints.

Fishogger & I decided to try and hit it before the heat. Well @ 0830 it was too late but we went for it anyway. Lots of short strikes and misses the first 30 minutes. Then it was put on the swallow tongue. Frogs were deep in their throats. Boated several & and FYI (for all the "fish mongrels) everything was released back to the wild. Thanks FH for tagging along was a good day. The following pics are for the "Hot Pilgrim woman"

Just an F.Y.I. I don't have a problem, I can quit anytime I want. (I'm just not a quitter) Besides 1 more time is not going to hurt anything. Wanted to beat the oven so hit it early this morning with FH. Before launching the yacht peeled 1 from shore. Then the word spread around the lake. only missed a few boated 36 (which ALL were released to the wild) FH had abit slower day (shoulders hurting him from last 2 outings) And yes I kicked it up a notch and hauled in a Crappie on a topwater Frog. Its been through Hell and back but still produces. Not much color on ole girl. Thanx again FH for another exhausting day.

kinda getting tired of bass.  thinking of switching to gills and crappie for a while.

Fishogger was unable to come out and play last night. So had to do a solo night bite. First 1 1/2 - 2 hrs had to battle jet-skiers after that was not bad. The bite was kinda slow until the sunset, then picked up abit. Started throwing plastic for smallmouth then switched to crankbaits for some Eyes. Caught 8 smallies all about 12"-14" two small eyes (which were released) and 2 Eyes that went in the livewell. 18" and 20"

Kidnapped the Fishogger for a late night bite. Started out searching for Smallies and Largemouth. Fishogger was giving me lessons. Several were caught on plastic (some kind of weird creature bait) after the sun fell below the horizon it was Eye time. Small crankbaits and Rattletraps. Several eyes missed and several boated. Even got a few bonus Gills on crankbait. Was not a bad night after all.

Not that I know of but I did read an article once that said it was possible. Said something about the females spawning in spurts over a period of time.

I got a spawn of crappies in one of my ponds a lot later than typical. I think I saw the fry in late June and they couldn't have been more than a week old.

Not all fish of a species spawn at the same time and if spawning conditions aren't right as in water temperature they can and will reabsorb their eggs.

that 4 letter word is taking up all my fishing time the last few days.  no work today so i shot out at dawn to try jigging up some crappie.  i found the water high and very muddy.  had about 2" visibility.  being that it was high i started at shore in the cover.  first couple spots were not what i was looking for and housing8- 10" runts.  after some searching with the vex i found what i was after.  they weren't on fire but i did have some fun. also nothing over 14" but i lost one at the boat that could have been around that mark.

anyhow here is the proof. ;D

these fish were caught in 6fow about 3ft down.  bobby garland baby shad plastic with shad spray on it.  they wanted it swimming sideways or setting still.  couldn't get them to hit it vertically jigged up and down.  bright color(don't know the name) but i don't think color would have mattered in that mud. lol

me and HFH are pulling the night shift for eyes again tonight.  hope to have some more fishporn, to post,  in a day or two.

I zip tied it to a 3/4x1/2 stick and clamped it to my transom.  it is just above the bottom of boat so slower speed looking in prime spots only.

BigR, Take your vex out night fishing.  Throw some underwater lights out, hang a lantern over the side of the boat, bring your ice gear, pick a night when it's calm, and have a ball.

The 2 "Hoggers" hit the water again. kinda slow on the bite, but did manage to boat a few small Eyes and some short Smallies. FH did manage to put a Largemouth in the boat, just a hair under 5#

Great bass and that up and coming eye is exciting too!

it was most likely a stocker in that lake Roe.  very possible there is reproduction on this lake.  I just never caught any smaller than stocks to confirm it there.

yeah that's for sure HFH. lol  too bad you didn't get the entire battle on video.  your pretty fast draw on that video camera  though! lol  I didn't even know you were filming at first.

short sunrise run today.  it was dead calm and foggy. awesome time to be on the water. not another boat on the entire lake.  hit a small creek fed lake for some bass and crappie action.  first cover I hit gave some nice chunky eater size black crappie.  it was a tree top in about 8fow with weeds.  water was a bit stained from the rain so I had to get it in their faces.  2"green yum twister on 1/8 jig.  toss it in and let it glide back under rod tip, then wham, they would hit it.  they slowed down after pulling a doz. or so off that spot, so I moved on.  hit 2 more spots, finding none or just a couple at home.  running and gunning till 8am with a fish or two here and there.  I went back to original spot and pulled 5-6 more and decided to head for the ranch, since the sun had broken out in a blaze. lol  no other boats had put in at all when I pulled out.
one jig head and one tail is all I used today.  the tail was pretty torn up from maybe 25-30 crappie and 3 bass worth of catchin.

jetted up to my parents cottage to mow their yard and fish a couple days.  first thing I do when I get unloaded was cast a spinner out off the beach.  first cast, wham a nice eater brownie.  a few casts later another brownie about same size.  so after I mowed the yard I cleaned and fried them up for a late lunch early dinner.  wasn't the plan but it worked. lol  evening bit yielded 4 eyes(1keeper) 8 bass(3 keepers) several rockos and redears.  I am beginning to think the glow plastic on my trailer hook I getting me more bites!  especially on the panfish!  they were constantly nipping at it and getting hooked once in a while.  didn't seem to bother the eyes any either.  I didn't take any night pics because I was alone and my phone don't have flash.

lunch is served though  ;D

struck out last night since I have a light work day today. HFH ate some bad seal steaks and was out of commission for this trip.  man it was a custom made day for evening eye bite too!  light breeze rains threatening(and delivering) cloudy as could be.  some of you know the feeling you get when presented with this situation.  it puts you in predator mode. lol  anyhow I got up to the lake about 7:30  or so and it was already on! the eyes were up on the breaks chowing down.  I started running and gunning key spots getting bit at them all.  didn't keep count of all the bass but I stuck 8 walleyes lost 1 at boat and got bit off by something I couldn't turn.  had to have been a pike, I was using 30#braid.  I lost a buzzbait to a monster pike a few weeks ago at this lake too.  after the rains around midnight it went south so I headed to ramp.

seen a first for me.  on the way in I almost ran over a guy out 200yrds from shore on shallow flat spear fishing!!!!!!!!!  at night no light!!!!  I passed by him at 50ft or less.  he came up at my 1oclock and I hit him with my headlight, so I got a good look at him.  had some big goggles on and spear gun in his hand.  what an idiot!  is that even legal in Indiana? lol  I didn't stop cuz he wasn't waving his arms or nothing.  I just yelled out "what an __shole" and stayed on it.  mite have been more than one out there?  was 3 cars at ramp with no trailers and no bank fishermen around.

anyhow with no flash on camera/cell, all I got was a shot of the 2 keepers in the ice water bath. :D

in the pic it looks like a shadow but its the second fish under a deep hooked floater. lol  that's what you get when you have a flip phone to take pics at night.  :-\

Way to go !
Amazing that very few guys fish at night! My two buddies, my Dad and I use to leave the house in Hobart about 6:30pm and drive to PawPaw or Pipestone Lake. Only two boats on the lake. Hammered the bass. Sometimes we'd get home around 5:00am, change clothes, lie down for half an hour, then go to work!!! Do this maybe three nights a week! No way 'could I do that today. We were nuts but boy did we have fun!!!

I would night fish all night for trout and then come to work an hour early with the boat in tow in the morning. Got into the break room and napped until the buzzer went off. Also passed out for ever 20 minute break during the day with a book over my head. One morning two ladies were loudly gossiping away in the break room. Never got any sleep that morning. It wasn't really their fault but I was upset!

yeah, most night there are very few if any fishing.  on walleye lakes we will see 2-3 other boats out.

cecil, I have at least 4 buddies that have slept in my boat, on clear, back in the day.  I would wake them up to bass fish for an hour or 2 at first light.  most nights we were limited out (10 fish each back then)by 12-1.  god I miss those meat hauls!!!! nice fat juicy fillets grilled with brown sugar butter and dill.  sssllluuurrrp!  :P

did a daybreak trip today.  small lake 2-300 acres or so.  not another car in the lot till I pulled out.  bite wasn't on fire but it was productive. lots of small crappie with a few bigger eaters here and there.  tossed green twister till it got mauled enough to change.  and if you know me that baby was chewed up believe me. lol  I put on a bobby garland glow green baby shad and bite was the same. they were engulfing the jig to the throat!  had 2 bass take me for a ride in the wood.  I lost the first one but got the second with a fight to the death limb wrap.  one of those creeeeking line on the wood sounding battles. it turned out to be a 16- 17"  bass.  figured the 2-3 min. war didn't do it any good so I kept it.  no big crappie at this lake this trip but they are there.

water was 68 and 8-12ft deep with the better fish holding about 6ft.

hit another location this morning.  the fish were really putting on the feedbag there!  most were sub keepers but I managed a sack of 11-12s for my trouble. being selective, as I didn't want to clean too many.  only caught 1 bass a bullhead and a rocko besides the crappie.  I did feel a lot of gill raps though.  same bobby garland baby shad plastic that the fish chewed on yesterday.  that one got me about 20 before I retired it.  jigged under the boat and casted out in 12fow.  they were holding shallower than the other lake. the lake or the weather who knows? id guess weather.  didn't count them it was one after another for a good long time.  if I took too much time on deep hooked fish they slowed down and I had to get them going again.  they never moved off the area, they just slowed as the sun got higher in the sky.

I texted HFH but he was in need of sleep after a run of 12hour shifts.  too bad, we mite have had a 100+ fish morning.  ill be going back to this lake in a week or so.  you can join me on that trip HFH.

the take for the 2hour trip.

another trip yesterday for couple hours.  got rained on for a bit but wasn't bad.  was probing around the drop offs with the jig picking up one or two here and there.  I came to this inside bend in the drop and caught a nice fatso, so I stopped and worked it over.  worked up on the drop hard without another hit for ever.  all the while I kept hearing ssplashes back over the deep behind me.  I was ignoring it because it usualy runt bass schooling the shad.  not getting bit anyhow I decided to play with the lil bass and casted back to the commotion.  wasn't bass after all.  it was crappie and they were acting like wipers. lol  as soon as my jig fell a foot or two it went sideways.  pulled in a 12"er.  same on the next cast same size.  this went on for about 10fish then it stopped.  all was quiet again.  down the way I seen the same thing going on.  I ran down there and did  it again.  ended up doing this for another hour or so until I couldn't find any more schools.  I don't know if they moved off or the shad assault just stopped?  ended up keeping 22 of them.  no monsters but no dinks out there either. the biggest was 13".

been more in the woods than on the water.  shrooms deer and turkey take a lot of time in October.  the leaves starting to change the last few days have been calling me to the water.  I found the morning bite real slow with these cold nights.  they were there just not in the mood and had to really work the jig to get bit.  1-2 fish off each cover area.  day before yesterday I hit the evening bite.  just on the tail end when I got there it seemed.  I caught a doz. or so then it shut off like a switch.  I jigged around till it was time for the lights but struggled.  next trip I think will be mid day to see if that helps?  all fish were average 10-12"ers no big ones.  that's gona change here soon though.  it will only get better till ice-up!

today was about he same as yesterday.  16 nice fat crappie and a bass.  jig and twister tail on 1/8th jig head.  6ft down over 10fow in the cover.  nothing big just eaters in the 11-13" range.

hit it twice today. 10-12am with about the same results this morning. I had a bonus 26" catfish take me for a good ride.  got me wrapped around a limb and made me wait it out for it to get free. lol real nice tussle tat I figured was a big bass or a pike.  I won the battle though and she was released to get bigger.  you never know what will hit a jig!  I was a little more selective on what I kept but still cleaned 15crapy and 3 bass.  all crappy were in the 12-13" range.

I broke the 14" mark(been couple weeks since the last one) when I hit it in the evening.  I got into a tree top that was occupied by some toad whites.  I pulled 4 crappie 12-14" in like 4 min.  mite have had more if I hadn't had to dig out 2 swallowed jigs with the stats.  these fish were up and feeding hard. I released all the fish I caught on the evening run.  didn't feel like cleaning anymore.  i caught the mornings fish way down deep.  this evening they were only in 6fow.  I don't know if the water temp made them rise or sundown?

anyhow I snapped a couple pics of the fat ones this evening.

also scored 6 floats from a spot I was on yesterday.  there was a boat across the way watching me pick off the crappie and they must have headed over there after I left. lmao bobbers in timber don't mix. their boat must been too expensive and shiny to go in and get them back.  real nice brand new floats too.  thanks fellas!  they must not have done any good after snagging and yanking.  they weren't back today. haha

took a fellow member out today for short trip. fished from 12-330  we only caught 15-18 fish but they were all dandies , including his PB.  he should be posting some pics of the fat beasts soon.  went to some totally new waters known for hogs in the past and it payed off.  great fun!

Yep, all nice keepers, all released to fight another day.  Several of them went 13" like this one.

I also caught my personal best, which went 14.75".

I have scarcely fished out of a boat this year due to back problems (which ultimately lead to back surgery), so it was nice to spend a little time out on the water during a beautiful (but chilly) fall day.

put it on your boat Cecil.  this hull came with it on there.  every boat I ever have will get one in future. handy as all get out for fast releases.  I can still read it fine for use. lol
