Sorry for the delay in answering..... using a heavy rod will definitely cut down on your casting distance. Maybe more weight? But you've already discovered this, I suppose. I still have the spin outfits, but have gone to baitcastin reels from Abu Garcia (6500). I gave up some distance for the line-out-alarm.
