Wearing gloves, does it make a difference.
« on: May 22, 2006, 03:04 PM »
Whenever i boon dog for kings in the rivers up here with eggs i usually use disposable glove when handling the stuff. I have always done it because i heard it helps u catch more fish since the fish can't smell your scent. However i han't put the theory to the test. Do any of u guys try to eliminate your scent when using bait and if so how much do u think it helps?
I've never been to heaven, but i have fished  in  Alaska.

trout....salmon have acute sense of smell...especially human.....a very wise old trout fisherman friend of mine always said this...."a dogs smell is a thousand times better than a human's......and a trout's smell is a thousand times better than a dog's"....he was scrupulous washing his hands BEFORE fishing for trout of any kind....Grump.....it does make a difference. 8)

I believe it could make a difference....as mentioned above it depends on what your fishing...I personally dont put much thought into it unless I have been handling something with strong scent.....sunscreen, gasoline...and so on.

I do not wear gloves, I just use extra scent/attractant if I have been handling one of thee above

I beleive it does make a difference with some thing's. When we fish at the beach for stripers the noseeum's are out in full force and some of my buddies cover themselves in bug repelent and I wouldn't use the stuff. It seem's that I always win the number's thing, don't know if thats the reason or not but I refuse to put any on or get it near the bait.

There was just a mention of a study done recently on that in this month's In-Fisherman with bass and how they can pick up scents such as sunscreen and bugspray on fisherman's hands.  They indicated that bass will shy away from lures that have such chemical scents on them.

Hey whatever it takes to keep those pesky bass off my lures when I'm walleye fishing I'm willing to try it.  ;)  TIme to load up on the sunscreen and bug spray the next time I go walleye fishing.   :D

Smelly jelly in anchovie or alewive flavors does wonders to those picky kings.  I don't bother wearing gloves.  I probally should just to keep the smelly jelly off my hands.

when I'm fishing for salmon or trout in rivers, I always wash my hands before fishing, then before I tie my bait, fly, lure etc. on i get my hands covered in mud from the river or lake I'm fishing in then rinse them off. People look at me like I am crazy, until they see me start catching fish. It also helps to get your hook muddy like I mentioned above. It's also important for me to do this because I do lawn care, so I always have gas and oil on my hands.

I do not wear gloves but I do like to scent my hands with something good.  In fishing stores you can buy a "cover scent" and there is one that has a lickerish scent, I think that stuff is the trick!! ;)

Yep- That would be anise.
Garlic works, too.

Filling the boat with gas is the ticket - for some reason gas blows out on the over flow with me  ;)

I have caught just as many - more in this case - but I wish I could have washed the hands before wetting the line.

Anyway - please refrain from the refined  :P

And WD-40 too if possible  :P

I tie all my eggs sack right on the bank before I fish. Get some magic thread no tying involved and built in cover scent after your done.
