Catch and Release Gut Hooked Fish Safely
« on: Jun 25, 2006, 09:18 AM »
For those of you practicing catch and release and hook fish too deep, rather than kill the fish or leave the hook in there, try the following technique:

http://www.in-fisherman.com/magazine/articles/if2806_HookRemoval/index.html

Leaving the hook in has always been a questionable practice, but this sounds good to me.  I've gone through the gills before to remove gilled hook fish that weren't bleeding, but never tried this on the gut hooked ones.  It sounds very promising.

the technique shown does work extremely well....having said that, yesterday was abit frustrating when a northern decided to inhale a crank...one of which was gut hooked...and mysteriously my handy pliers disappeared....try getting that out of a northern with attitude...and a healthy set of teeth to boot...Grump

Tried it twice last night worked great both times. The bass are alive to back it up if you want to ask them. I never have many deep hooksets . Last night I had two and remembered reading this post . Pulled it off like a pro thanks to you . I guess thats what this site is for . Thanks for the info  ;D ;D ;D

Glad that I could help.  I can't take too much credit for this one though, I found it on www.riversmallies.com courtesy of one of the members over there (boost) and also In-Fisherman too.  RS.com is a great bass fishing site but unfortunately it's shutting down next month.

In-Fisherman may not be what it once was, but it is still one of the best recourses out there. I have used the "turn the hook around" trick dozens of times, and I think every C&R fisherman should give that link a look.

Good post, thank you. ;)

That trick works excellent. Ive used it a couple of times.  A guy who I was on a canoe trip with a couple of years ago taught it to me.
