River smallies on the fly
« on: Sep 11, 2006, 05:10 AM »
I love fishing for river smallies, and the Fishfever DVD I won has a great segment on fly-fishing for them. They were using surface poppers though, and that technique hasn't worked for me.
The fish I'm targeting feed heavily on crayfish in the summer, so I was thinking streamers that imitate them? Any other suggestions?
Also- The river is full of snags.

Wollybuggers tied with Blond maribu, blonde hackle and blonde chenile.  Also olive colored wollybuggers work good.  They are cheap and easy to tie.

...a topic near and dear to my heart...

First I'd say keep plugging away with the topwaters.  Vary retrieves, popper styles, colors etc.  You know the drill.  It may be getting a little late in the year for them depending on your river, but I think it's the greatest thing in the fishing world and start with a deerhair bug almost everytime out.

My favorite crayfish patterns are the pulsator by Gary Taylor, the near 'nuff crayfish by Dave Whitlock, and the crazy dad by Shane Stalcup.  You should be able to find all of these online.  I used to tie the ringneck craw almost exclusively.  The claws are made from ringneck pheasant feathers and look great... out of the water.  They were way too stiff in the water.  Look for patterns with claws made out of marabou or zonker strip to get more movement in the water.  Kelly Gallup ties a great fly with zonker claws, but I can't remember the name of it right now.

As far as other patterns that work well, but aren't exact imitations.  Buggers are a classic and always good.  I usually turn to  conehead zuddlers though.  I just have more confidence in them.  I almost always tie them in natural colors, but every once in a while they seem to want them in bubble gum or chartreuse.

Make sure you are deep enough.  I know snagging sucks, but we fly fishers are notorious for fishing too high.  The majority of the time, our fly is not nearly as deep as we think it is if we're in moving water.  Add some split shot or a mini sink tip if you aren't already using a sink tip line.

Check out "Smallmouth Fly Fishing" by Tim Holschlag.  It's helped me quite a bit.

All IMHO.

My #1 river smallmouth pattern is a Chartreuse Clouser Minnow.  I keep a little tension on the line and let it swing through the water.  At the end of the drift, I will give it a few strips back up stream.  The fish usually hit at the end of the swing or on the first strip.  This works best in a swift current

How shall I amuse myself today?

For crayfish, I tie this look-a-like in different sizes.   Works great for bass.  (and trout too)

Claws are bucktail (natural or dyed green) Tied in and spread
Brown Saddle hackle for the legs
Grouse for the tail
Heavy gold wire for the segments
Body is dubbed brown rabbit fur.
You can weight with lead wire.

Hook placement is under the claws so as you strip it looks just like a crayfish trying to escape.

Large sheet foam frogs and hoppers work well on top.  Variants of clousers are lethal, Near 'Nuff Sculpin is great deep as well. Love a Hellgie as a nymph at times. Nothing more than a bugger with a long stiff ostrich tail instead of maribou, simple, easy and nasty.
