...a topic near and dear to my heart...
First I'd say keep plugging away with the topwaters. Vary retrieves, popper styles, colors etc. You know the drill. It may be getting a little late in the year for them depending on your river, but I think it's the greatest thing in the fishing world and start with a deerhair bug almost everytime out.
My favorite crayfish patterns are the
pulsator by Gary Taylor, the
near 'nuff crayfish by Dave Whitlock, and the
crazy dad by Shane Stalcup. You should be able to find all of these online. I used to tie the ringneck craw almost exclusively. The claws are made from ringneck pheasant feathers and look great... out of the water. They were way too stiff in the water. Look for patterns with claws made out of marabou or zonker strip to get more movement in the water. Kelly Gallup ties a great fly with zonker claws, but I can't remember the name of it right now.
As far as other patterns that work well, but aren't exact imitations. Buggers are a classic and always good. I usually turn to conehead zuddlers though. I just have more confidence in them. I almost always tie them in natural colors, but every once in a while they seem to want them in bubble gum or chartreuse.
Make sure you are deep enough. I know snagging sucks, but we fly fishers are notorious for fishing too high. The majority of the time, our fly is not nearly as deep as we think it is if we're in moving water. Add some split shot or a mini sink tip if you aren't already using a sink tip line.
Check out "Smallmouth Fly Fishing" by Tim Holschlag. It's helped me quite a bit.
All IMHO.
