Drum Corps Fans?
« on: Aug 10, 2006, 08:19 AM »
Any other drum corps fans out there?  DCI is at Camp Randall this year, about 2 miles from my house.  There are corps at every school I drive by.  I was weeding flower beds last night to the sound of distant parking lot warm-up books.  Very cool.

I saw a documentary about competitions among DC teams. It was very interesting. Also of note is the extreme level of commitment these kids have to their work. They train for years, and do to an age limit, many only get one shot at the national title.
I was very impressed by the great character, maturity, and level of discipline possessed by these outstanding American teens.
I do salute these great young Patriots :flag: :flag: :flag:     :clapping::clapping: :clapping: :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:

I marched in the Madison Scouts from '92-96.  So thanks for the huge compliment, fishryc.  It was probably the greatest thing I've ever done.  Two and a half months of riding the bus with my best friends every summer, sleeping on gym floors, playing sold out shows every night, and generally having the time of my life.  True, we practiced for 8-10 hours day, everyday, so there was a pretty big commitment -- and that's just the summer schedule.  But I also made friends that I'll have for the rest of my life.  I never got that World Title, but I can claim, with no guilt, that I was a member of a world class horn line for years.

I'm going to play in an alumni reunion corp tomorrow with 240 other brothers.  It's a standstill show --we're too old to march, but it'll be awesome to be back on the field with them again.  Last time we did one of these there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

I can't resist... so here's a link to our final show of 1996.  Anyone that appreciates quality brass playing and extremely tight drumming should check it out.  Unfortunately, the quality is pretty poor so your not going to get even a hint of the power, but if it piques your interest, all the better.  You've seen the opening bugler, John Shipper, on the Conan O'Brien show.  The second snare solo kicks and the last two minutes of drill are outrageous, if I do say so myself.  I could never do that now. >:(

And I'm always trying to recruit new fans, so here's a link to the Drum Corps International home site.

My daughter is in the high school colorguard - indoor winterguard in the winter and then with the marching band during football season.  My older one, now in college, had done marching band.

We went to Drum Corp competition at Giants Stadium last week and it was fantastic.  The music and marching and colorguard precision was unbelievalbe.  The Crossman and the Cadets were both there along with teams from other parts of the country.  The Cadets put on workshops all day for the high school kids and it was great.  A couple of our marching band members were with the Crossman this summer.

Next week starts band camp - and then the high school football/marching band season will be in full swing.

Congrats on being with the Madision Scouts!!!!!

My boss is all about that stuff.  I guess he was in some team from NJ (I think) that won  the finals a couple of years in a row a while ago.   As a matter of fact he is in Wisconsin watching the show out there right now.

Thats wonderful to hear.  I'm sure she's having the time of her life.  I'm a little jealous. ;)
I marched at the Meadowlands a handful of times.  All I can remember is that we really had to concentrate because the fans were so loud that I couldn't hear us playing.  A truely great venue!

That would be the Cadets of Bergen County, the same corps that RJP is referring to, I'm pretty sure.  Ask him if he had a good time in my hometown.  Do you know what he played(s)?

Thanks RJP.  I went to the semi's on Friday night.  All the corps were great.  Of course I think Madison got robbed, but everyone thinks that about their former corp. ;)

I didn't see the finals because I had a wedding Saturday night.  I wish I would've been there.  The next show in Madison is scheduled for the second week of June, 2007.  That's a long wait. :-\
