Warning new line
« on: Apr 25, 2004, 08:42 AM »
I fished last weekend for cod in Mass. We used the newer ultra thin braided line. Very good line. But I and outhers in our party lost a lot of fish on the hook set. This line has little or no stretch to it. A very short jerk on the line will set the hook. And we were fishing between 200'- 250' of water.

That's the beauty of the newer lines. No stretch , even in deep waters. It really helps hook sets once you get used to not setting the hook like one of those bass guys on t.v.

You might try a mono leader any where  10-50 ft. It will give you a litte stretch.
I fish for those "stupid fish" BASS. Largemouth Smallmouth Stripers, and even Rock bass.

Better yet....Use circle hooks and you don't need to worry about the hook set. ...Just start reeling. It makes it a lot easier to release shorts. All my saltwater rigs have PowerPro on them.  It is deffinatly a "Direct Connect" to the fish.

Yeah, circle hooks are a great option.  I use super lines down to 600 ft. for halibut.  Before super braid lines were invented, we missed a lot of fish because of stretch using traditional dacron line.  You don't want that ungodly stretch in deep water or it's thick diameter in heavy currant, that's what makes super lines soooo good!   Good luck with those cod mrlongbeard.

We were using boat supplied tackle. I wasn't setting the hook that hard or so I thought. Captain said that cod have soft mouths. I really like this line it just takes a little different tactics is all.

What boat were you on? I know Walsh's use circles....that may have been the problem. The first 10 rules of circle hooks are : Don't set the hook.......

What size fish were coming over the rail? I hope to go down on a friends boat in June. By then they sould be on the inside humps, so we won't be fishing too deep.

I started using Fire Line when it came out and I love it. I don't lose near as much tackle. I had a few staight hooks come back though. Line setting is a breeze. Normally the fish hook themselves.
