Here are the pics from our 3rd annual smallie (small jaws) trip to Kalkaska michigan.  Fishin was VERY slow but we managed quite a few dandy small jaws outta Skegmog over the weekend, i also boated my first ever muskie but he was perty small, also caught a jaws with a band on em!!!  Found out the band is worth $10 if i call the DNR and report the number and the fish released.  $10 richer!!!  Heres a few pics of some of our fish from the weekend.

Get to go back up there this comin weekend to pick up my truck and boat, truck blew an oil pump on the way up and put me outta service so i had to use dad's truck all weekend to pull the boat around.  Left the boat and a friends house up north, and dropped my truck off to a mechanic on the way home.  Hopefully the cold waters warm up and the fish turn on better!! Enjoy the pics everyone!!!

I had no idea about it either, turns out its worth like $10 or sumthin if i call in the number.  Thought it was perty kool!!

They usually band fish like that during the spawning period when they are easy to net.  The did a survey last spring up in the keweenaw on Portage and Torch Lake for walleyes and pike.  I ended up catching 18 walleyes and 6 pike with tags.  it just helps them know how the fish are doing and where they move to after the spawn.  Those were some nice bass by the way.  If you are interested in 5 lb average sized smallies...come up to the keweenaw and try portage lake.  its unbelievable.  Ive landed several 6-7 pounders...all released of course.

THats pry where this fish came from is Torch, i caught em on Skegmog.  I would love to make it to portage!! I'll have to look on the map and figure out where it is from where i'll be this weekend and give err a shot!!!

Im talkin about Portage Lake in Houghton county, in the upper penninsula.  Its connected to lake superior.  I think the fish get so big because of all the smelt and hearing that move through the system.  Monster pike too in there.  We always get some 15-20 pounders around first ice and ice out.  You should take a week and try it some time.  Let me know, i can show ya around up here.
