Fav. walleye lure
« on: Mar 27, 2004, 07:22 PM »
Mine is a 2-3" cordell super spot or bill lewis rattletrap. I like the fire tiger colors and the silver and blue colors, and also, the banana color.

My fav. soft bait is a curly tail grub.

What are your guys' fav. walleye lures and why?

Jigs are tough to beat.  Almost all of them catch fish, especially twister tails.  Lately my hot twister has been the Bass Pro Shops Catepillar Grub in blue pearl salt & pepper.  A little scent, like Smelly Jelly adds some punch to it as well.  This has been real hot for me this year.

My favorite hard baits have been the Rapala suspending Husky Jerk, and the size 9 Rapala Tail Dancer.  They keep on hitting them, especially the bigger fish.

I'm sure that there are a lot more lures that would put the same kind of hurtin' on our walleyes down here, but I haven't discovered which ones yet.  In the mean time, the ones above continue to put a hurtin' on their toothy jaws and pics for my memories.

I agree, grubs are probably one of the most productive, consistent lures for all game species.  I like glow, chartreuse colors the best, sometimes dying the glow tails chartreuse.  The only problem we've had with jigs is they snag alot in rivers.  Although, without a doubt, #12 suspending husky jerks (regular and deep diving)  are my favorite lures.  It is definitely a big fish lure and I sometimes catch muskies on them.    The color I've had the most success with has been silver with a black back.  You can fish them with a straight slow retrieve, stop & go, or twitching them.  Two of my husky jerks look like they've been in a war, teeth marks everywhere!  Taildancers and like crankbaits have also consistently produced.

For handlining I'd have to go with a Floating Rapala in the Clown (CLN) pattern, but for jigging it'd be a chartreuse leadhead with a 4 inch motor oil body/chartreuse tail worm.

Depends where and what time of year. Lake Erie, I like a Renosky Pirate Crystallina, usually purple, tipped with a crawler. If not that then a meat rig. For spring and fall on Honeoye Lake, I like to cast shad raps or larger stick baits. Summertime on Honeoye, I jig with a black Foxee Jig or brown/yellow bucktail.

I always keep two rods rigged up, one with a 3 inch curlytain grub in white, yellow, purple, chartreuse, or some kind of brown or crawdad color. I like a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce gamakatsu jighead. When fishing rocky reefs that steal jigs like a SOB, I like to put my grubs on a Lindy No snagg timber rock jig in the 1/8 or 1/4 ounce size.
Often when walleyes are feeding though, a crankbait will work best. My favorites are the Cordell Super Spots. I seem to like the smaller sizes in chrome/blue or some type of baitfish pattern. The discontinued Rapala Rattlin Fat Rap is awesome, as can be bomber model A's. Rapala Tail Dancers, Cordell Wally Divers, and Rebel Wee Crawfish also kick butt. I am a big advocate of smaller crankbaits fished on light line. Just seem to catch more fish than big cranks.

Hey slipbob - where is your input on this subject?  I would have thought that "the walleye wizard" would have addressed this issue by now!  ;D

Come on, I want to build a walleye tackle box so let's hear from all you walleye experts.  What goes in the box to take to my favorite walleye waters?

Build me a list of essential lures/jigs/crankbaits that has to be in a walleye fishermen's tackle box!!

Thanks for prompting my response though, and this fall Cider you will experience the super bait as well after I swear you to secrecy, of course.

I'm going to hold you to that!  Trouble is that I will be doing some walleye fishing in Alberta in July.  Thought I might like to have my act together in time for that.   :-X

Nice!  ;D  I'm glad you posted those pics.  I tossed and turned all night trying to imagine what you have in your walleye kits!  I came real close to envisioning your secret walleye bait, but then the fog started rolling in and the alarm clock started barking at me!  >:(

Hey, do you suppose that if you were to stuff those tackle boxes into your CD-ROM drive I could retrieve them on my end?  I mean come on, you're already stocked and organized...  The work is already done!  8)

I see you have some three-way swivels in there.  Do you use those for three way rigging with the bell sinkers and live bait on your wide gap octopus hooks?

That's a nice assortment of jigheads you have!  I am looking at a kit in the cabelas catalog of a hundred or so various jigheads of different colors.  The kit is just under $20 and seems like perhaps a lifetime supply of jigs!

A purple lead head tied with black bucktail and a few strands of rainbow falsh-a-bou. It's a killer jig in the middle of july
