Help Raystown Lake fishermen
« on: Feb 03, 2010, 06:38 PM »
Hi all, I want to plan a trip to Raystown Lake this year with my family to fish for Stripers, Lakers and anything else that bite our bait.  We've never been there or fished for anything this big before on our own. I figure we would probably troll for these bigger fish I assume? I need to get the proper tackle for these bigger fish also! I will probably get a couple trolling rods with line counters and use Dipsy Divers, flasher/dodgers etc. Can you tell me what terminal tackle is needed for these bigger fish.
I have lots of questions to ask, such as what is the normal depth the thermocline? How deep do these fish normally hold in the summer?
Thank you in advance for any help
Greg

Are walleye size trolling rods safficient for lakers and stripers? 10-25# line??..I plan on trying other methods also, But I never triolled before and need to get set up for that also..ie.rods, reels, bait types, hooks, and any other terminal tackle. these are the tips and info I'm looking for. I'm not asking anyone for their favorite hot spots.... unless they wanna tell me ;D..lol.. just looking for info on getting rigged this year for a trip up to Raystown. Thanks

I got my first boat less than a year ago, and I have many of the same questions.  I found that the Luhr Jensen website (maker of dipsies, dodgers, etc.) has some good info to help get you started.

Check out their "Tech Reports", "Tech Sheets" and "Tech Bulletins" on subjects such as fishing with Dipsey Divers and lake trolling for trout.  They aren't Raystown specific, but it's a good start.

Here is a link:

I'm gonna use Walker Deeper Divers instead of Dipseys..walker has a lot better reviews. It seems that most everyone is hush hush about giving any suggestions as to just getting rigged for trolling. I'm just gonna go sit around with binoculars and watch the pros and guides there and get set up with what they are using ;D. I'll have plenty of tackle stocked like divers, boards, flashers/dodgers, spinner rigs, jigs etc. by the time it's time to fish. People must think we are coming to fish out the lake or something. Oh well the internet is a great thing and can do lots of research on here to, plus all the pics and videos help.

Keep an eye on "POPLAR BEAR" hide out in his boat if you have to. he has pic's posted copy those if you have to, look for jigs or spoons he may have laying around on his boat. he is the go to guy on that lake. LOL

if it swims in that lake he can catch it.

GANDER MOUNTAIN HAS THE BEST TROLLING RODS ....THEY HAVE DIPSEY , LEADCORE , DOWNRIGGER , WIRE ROLLER AND PLANNERBOARD RODS IN THE GANDER MOUNTAIN BRAND WITH A 2 YEAR WARRANTY , NOW 35% OFF $34.99 EACH , REGULAR $49.99...........WATCH THE STANDING TIMBER , ITS EVERYWHERE AND COMES WITHIN 20 FEET OF THE SURFACE EVERYWHERE ........YOU MAY HAVE LUCK WITH DIVERS AND DODGERS , BUT THEY DON'T SEEM TO WORK FOR ME AT RAYSTOWN LIKE THEY DO AT DEEPCREEK LAKE IN MARYLAND AND THE YOUGH . SOME PEOPLE USE BLUEFOX VIBRAX SPINNERS AND SPOONS  IN SLIVER , KEEP YOUR PRESENTATIONS SMALL , AND FOCUS ON ONE PART OF THE LAKE DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY THE BIG LAKE .......

I already looked at my local Gander, they had 1 style trolling rod combo. fo $100. No dipseys or walkers. I asked a sales person and they said they arent getting much in trolling in our store anymore. Not good sales on them here in our area. I did order 2  8'6" trolling combos from Cabelas and an assortment of walkers deeper divers to start and a couple of good rod holders. I need to focus on line and an assortment of lures and baits next.

Wow I think I would have bought a bunch too. they look almost like dipsey divers, except you dont need a screwdriver to adjust and no rings to fall off. ;D  oh,  if you know what one of those look like that is! I cant draw a picture here John to show you...lol
