Museum piece flyrod? You tell me...
« on: Aug 18, 2011, 03:10 PM »
My Father purchased this rod when he got back from WWll. It's an Orvis impregnated bamboo rod, the ''Manchester'' model, 8' three piece with two tips in absolute 'Pristine' condition, in the original four compartment cloth sheath in its original aluminum screw top tube. The numbers at the ferrule joints are all #5423 so it's the same as was made, and you still have to rub and twist the male ferrule end against the side of your nose to for the oils to get the ferrules to slip together easily. It's a funny coincidence that my wifes last name is Manchester. Fifty plus years after Dad bought it I married Sherry Manchester.

He showed me how to use it when I was just a kid, after I learned how to properly take the line off the reel and spin it onto the drying racks they used for flyline back then. It was twenty years later before he'd let me 'Borrow' it from time to time and when he gave it to me I'd only use it for those special events on those special creeks and streams now famous for their flyfishing status. It's been many years since I used it and for as long as we've had it few other hands have ever even held it.

Does anybosy out there know anything about its current market value at all. I hate to think of selling it but medical bills and a short prospect of a longer life find me in a quandry. None of my children, Grandchildren, or great grandchildren show any inclination to have it as they don't fish the same way anymore. Any ideas on where I might sell it? Anybody?

I got one from my Grandpa - way back when .... give the Manchester store a call. When I did they still had all the info on that rod - the builders name/ date made ... and sent me the paper work... could help bring the value up if ya have the paper work to go with it.

I did that and their records are missing on certain rods and years. They said they were sorry but, try again. I guess it's time to check again, thanks.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Yes, Orvis rods made by Wes Jordan fetch a good price. Notice the serial # as well. very low. Very likely one of the last of the non-impregnated rods from this group of builders.

Too bad it was refurbished.
