i'll agree with you Mike so i don't seem like an ogre

i know some of the guys on here are young and without kids so sacrifices can be made.  when i quit smoking i would buy all sorts of stuff to make up for it, you can buy a highdollar rod every month of the year for the price of smokes every month.

maybe even give up beer for a little while........ :cookoo:

Whoa BigBrother,  lets not get carried away. :'( There is absolutely no reason to be giving up the beer,  talk about making sure our priorities are straight. :-\ :w00t:  As long as we agree to get along,  there are no ogres. ;)  I understand where you are coming from and I envy you.  But,  I will still catch fish,  my problem is time on the water. :'(

Any rod will catch pretty much any fish. Ask some of Icers that land "suprise" fish. A10 lb. Laker on 4 lb. test. It is a matter of how comfortable you feel with a certain rod. I have a sickness with fishing and have at least one or two rods for almost every species. Yeah, it may sound like a waste of money, but that is why I am in my 30's and have remained single. (never maried) There is a rod and reel for every ocasion. Just use common sense when choosing a rod. Buy the right size and weight for what kind of fish you are after.
Remember it is all about what you want.

I say buy the best you can. For me, being quite young, working and getting paid way too little, I can't go out an buy 8 St Croix rods. I saved up and bought one, and its great, but the rest of my rods, with the exception of my flyrod, cost somewhere around $40.  I can't spend that kind of money when I'm saving for a car, a boat, and the girlfriend, it just won't happen. I have the time to get on the water, but I don't have the $$$.
Mike, wanna buy some time from Slappy? :P
$10 AN HOUR!
Buy the best you can afford, don't set yourself with a handicap before you hit the water.

I agree 100% with what Pasquatch said.  Of all the rods I have the only ones that I've spent more than about $40 on are my flyrod (got a fenwick on clearence for $75) and my tuna rods which I managed to find for about $50 each (Now if only the weather would cooperate this fall so I can use them).

I've managed to find Fenwick baitcast rods on clearence for under $18 at a local sporting goods store. They finally realized they had them there for 6 months and didn't sell any so they put them on clearence for $35.97 and they still didn't sell. Went back 2 weeks later and any sale item ending in $.97 was half price. But then again, I made up for getting the rod cheap by matching it up with a Penn International 965 for stripers and muskies.
Chasing them pigs with fins!

AK isn't coming soon enough....can't wait to fight with 1 grizzly for 100,000 fish instead of 1,000 snaggers for 10.

ya Mike, i didn't think  the beer thing would fly but i threw it out there.....and you're right, nobody who has to work could possibly get evough time on the water.

Pasquatch,
a little friendly advice, don't get a car get an old pick-up truck, the boat priority is excellent, but the real problem is the girl friend.  you really don't want one of those, i have seen so many good fishing and hunting carreers get snuffed out because of those.  but if you have to get one you can save money on dates by going 4wheeling with a bench seat ;).

i'm going to a custom tackle shop for saltwater stuff today with my dad, no adding to the arsenal today though.  new wife+1st home=no money, glad i don't have to replace anything this season ::)
