i have 92 johnson 70, and i am pretty sure our lower units are very similar, i just squeeze the LU oil in straight from the tubes, two tubes worth.

i use a pump it screws into the screw holes it less messy . and i fill it from the bottom hole till it ouses out the top hole . this cuts down on air pockets  ;D

to end the air pockets, i simply remove the top screw and fill from the bottom till oil starts comin' out the top, but i bet a pump IS quite a bit less messy.

well i squeezed as much as i could out of a qt.  got 90% of it in there but it didnt come out the top hole so i will go pick up another tube to finish the job. i think the tubes woulda been easier to squeeze out than the qt. container...thanks for all the help guys

Scott, I always fill from the bottom and when it starts to come out of the top you should be fine. Always check after the first run to make sure that no air bubble was there and the lower unit oil is still at the top hole. When/if I need to top off, I use a tool that looks like a syringe so I can just finish it off using the top hole. Less mess that way. Check for discoloration of your old fluid and this will tell you how the prop seel is. You should change this in the fall before you store your boat, that way if the prop seal went bad over the summer and allowed water into the lower unit you will find it before it freezes and destroys your LU.
