Mendon/Rochester Bass Land Casting
« on: Jun 06, 2016, 12:48 PM »
Hey everyone. Not new to the area but new to fishing in this area. I am looking for good fishing spots around the Rochester/Mendon area that is good for land casting (no boat here). Also, what baits are you using in the area that is suggested?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Rochester: Irondequoit Bay, Charlotte & Summerville piers, Webster Park has pier too, Bear Creek launch, Erie Canal...

Mendon : Mendon Ponds

I am not the best to ask, maybe some locals can chime in.

The piers can be fun at certain times of the year. During the summer they're a real pain to try to fish. Between boat traffic and touristos, they'll make you crazy. Although....the scenery ain't all that bad ;D

Access to lake shore casting in the finger lakes region is limited unless you have friends who own lakeside property. If your shore bound, my suggestion would be to get into some of our local streams and get wet! There's some great smallmouth fishing to be had in the warm water streams in our area. Easy access and tons of fun.

Honeoye creek, Canandaigua Outlet, Genesee River ( upper reaches), sandy creek, Johnson creek, oak orchard River, to name a few.
I fly fish all of these and more for bass, crappies, bluegills, carp, fall fish etc.

You have Salmon Creek at Braddocks Bay (fishing platform), Sandy Creek in Hilton ,  Maxwell creek, Oatka creek from Warsaw to Scottsville , Irondequoit creek from Victor to Irondequoit Bay,  Eastkoy and Wiscoy creeks, Cohocton Creek, and Black Creek from Churchville to Rochester at the Ballentine bridge(launch and fishing access).

We forgot to mention the Erie Canal. Terrific shore fishing opportunities all along its length. From locks, parks and foot paths. I probably fist the canal as much or more than any other waters in NY.

Basically anywhere you see water, fish it! Mendon Ponds is a great place to start and you could spend a lifetime walking the trails to the those five ponds. Throw plastic worms rigged weedless.
*P.S. Rg, I wouldn't tell too many people about fisting the canal!

Hamlin Beach State Park has rock jetties into Lake Ontario with good fishing and there is Oak Orchard creek as well out to the West. The ponds in Durand Eastmam Park and the pond at Seneca Park, behind the zoo hold fish.
