my first musky experience
« on: Aug 30, 2005, 09:11 PM »
I was fishing on one of the few musky lakes in my area today and nearly had a musky jump in the boat.  I was twitching a rapala over a weed bed and my lure fouled on a weed so i reeled it straight in, when the lure got right next to the boat a musky jumped clear out of the water just missing the rapala and nearly jumping the boat, splashing water all over my dad and i who luckly was looking when it happened otherwise he probably wouldn't believed me as to what it was. It wasn't a monster, maybe in the mid 30's but it was a cool experience none the less. I'd love to hear anyone else's cool or unusual musky encounters

Great story pike hound.

I was fishing in WI with some family members on a pontoon boat. I had my regular rod set up with a leech for any stray Walleye, my daughters Mickey rod set up with a worm for gills, and I was casting a bucktail for Musky. The bobber on the Mickey went down, so I set the hook. Not a second after I set the hook, I felt a monster weight on the other end. After a few holy s#!%$, I saw a 3-4' Ski come to the surface. I yelled to my brother to get the net and at that point the Ski let go and swam away. The 5" gill that I had hooked was mangled and the gearson the Mickey pole were shot. Man, what an experiance though.

Goes to show you never know when or what a muskie will strike, pike hound. My first was caught accidentally while trolling the shallows for trout one spring. I was fishing solo in 1999 out of a 12' John Boat fishing with 6lb. test and a 1/4 oz. Phoebe. Landed a 32 inch tiger and man was I pumped. Now they're stuck in my head. I have muskie fever and spend most of my fishing time targeting those awesome beasts, reading anything and everything I can, and doing my best to improve not only fishing but releasing as well.

Here's the pic as bad as it is:
