Yo-Zuri pins minnow
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:40 PM »
This weekend while trolling I managed to lose two nice fish when the treble hook actually pulled out of the body of the bait (the rear treble)...this happened not once, but TWICE on two separate trolling passes....has anyone else experienced this...I was kind of p!ssed because I paid 6 bucks apiece for em.  They worked great, but I started the day with 6 of em and after losing one and then having the hooks pull out of two of em (which all but ruined the body), I'm down to three.....

i have had steelhead pull the wire that holds the trouble hook right out of the body on some rapala stickbaits before. but i wasn't too ticked because i bought them for a dollar at walmart because some kid messed up and sold half their stock for a buck when it was only suppose to the renegade lures by wal mart.

well, it's been a month and I never ever heard back from Yo-Zuri after submitting a complaint on their website.  No biggie, but an e-mail would have been nice.  I'd like to have some principles and say that because of their poor customer service I won't be buying anymore of their lures, however those pins minnows work so darn good on springtime browns that I simply can't make that statement.

I have used the Pins minnows for 2 years now and never had that happen to me, and I have caught browns around 5lbs in heavy current.  Now you have made me paranoid.  If you get a response, please post it.  For $6 a piece, they should never break.

MikeVT,
The fish I caught were browns between 7 and 10 lbs. and the ones I lost were in that same size range.   I never heard back from Yo-Zuri.  The lures I am speaking of were bought a couple of years back and are silver with an olive back and metallic pink stripe....look like a baby rainbow.  I was really mad, but like Mac states, maybe I just got into a defective batch.   I bought all of the ones I have the same day from the same store so they probably all came from the same lot.  I wasn't asking Yo-Zuri to replace them or anything, although it would have been nice, just a courtesy e-mail back would have been enough.

Yep- I just got three of them this year, and I don't care if there's a "bad batch".

that is a whole heck of alot of fish for those little tiny stock trebles...no wonder they bent out!  I have had  browns that size bend out #4's on me!  I have used pins minnows handlining with leadcore for smaller trout (12"-18") and not had a problem.

BigRed,
The trebles didn't bend out, instead the whole hook, split ring, and the rest of the assembly pulled out of the body leaving a cracked body on the bait and a hole in the back of the body of the bait.  On top of that I was trolling with 6 pound leaders and they were taking drag as well, so I wasn't tring to horse them in or anything.  I've just never had a bait come apart like that and it happened not once, but twice in the same day.

ah, my mistake, i didnt read your original post clearly.  I do wonder if yo-zuri had that caliber of trout in mind when they designed the lure? probably not.  I have had thundersticks broken by trout, and they are a fairly strong design.

I'm not really complaining because I've caught tons of browns on those things....it happens.   just thought it was funny to have it happen twice the same day.  you are right though, they probably didn't figure on such a small bait catching such big fish.  my shift key isn't working on my keyboard  ???

I have had bowfin break unrusted Gamakatsu hooks before, it can happen. Pin Minnows are decent lures, I know that they are well constructed lures, although they don't have the internal wiring of raps, correct?
