open water FL 8 tranducer
« on: Apr 07, 2006, 11:47 PM »
I should have asked this before I made the purchase but at least I still have the receipt. I wanted an open water xducer for a trolling motor and all Gander Mountain had was a transom mount. No big deal to adapt so I bought it. Now i am thinking there may be other problems like noise / flux lines from the trolling motor or other reasons Vex offers both types.

Anyone know of why the vexlar high speed transom mount xducer won't work when mounted on a trolling motor?

Hey Cluster  ::) I also have the vex FL-8. I used it open water with the 12 degree ducer I used for hardwater. Don't know why they offer a thru hull ducer. I set mine right on the bottom of the canoe and got accurate reading right thru the aluminum. Fish and all.  FH

And I was thinking about buying one of those alumaducer's. I'm gonna try my hard water ducer first.

As far as I know it should work fine. They are all basically the same and shielded. The HS has a wedge shape to try to eliminate drag and bubble interferance at speed. The trolling motor type is round and shaped to mount to the curved housing of the motor and is for lower speed use.

fiddlehead I did the same thing in my RamX jon boat. One thing to be careful of is the transducer. It was not designed to be used "dry". I used a small tupperware container (with water in it) and just placed it on the floor with the transducer in it. If you use it dry you can damage the TD and shorten the life.

Lonewolf, We didn't have much worry about running it dry. I failed to mention it was pouring!  ;D FH

That transducer will work just fine. The ones made for the TM's are smaller and shaped to be added to the bottom of the motor (or thru hull).

I dont see it being a problem. The ones that are made for a trolling motor are nice because they zip tie to you head on the motor. you still have the receipt i would bring it back Cabelas carries the one you need. good luck
