Weekend Report....
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:03 PM »
Well this weekend.... Started it off right by blowing an oil pump out of my truck which resulted in having to leave my truck and boat in kalkaska, truck at the shop, boat at a friends house.  Fishing was FAR from great, but the weather wasnt.  Awesome time to be on the water and in the woods looking for shrooms!!!  THis year was WAY different from past years up there.  Water temps were anywhere from 48 degrees up to 58, but did not see one temp higher than 60.  Had a REAL hard time finding fish, but managed a few.  Skegmog was our best producer this year handing out quite a few TOAD smallies!!!  We spent LOTSA time on ol SKeggy, little time on Starvation and Big Twin which neither one produced well enough to even mention!!! Since fishin was slow we took off one day and went toward Lake City for some MOrells  even that was slow, found about 40 morells in a couple hours of lookin.  Despite the slow fish we did have a very enjoyable weekend, weather was AWESOME!!!  Eating was GREAT and friends and family around to lighten our BAD moods about the slow fishing thing.  But o well we got over it!!  WIll be going back up this comin weekend to pick up the truck and boat, would like to stay the whole weekend and fish again in hopes that we get some warmer weather to warm that water up over or around the 60 degree mark.  Hope everyone else had a fun and safe weekend and a little better fishin!! I'll post some pics later on, batteries in the cam are dead now so i have to get new batteries....

my weekend was awesome... tried getting some eyes in the shallows of my "home lake" up north on our cabin on Caulkins Lake.. My dad did not agree with my choice on tactics but I produced a nice 25 inch walleye. The only fish of the weekend on that lake.. Needless to say I had my dad eat some crow with fresh walleye and some bluegill i thawed and brought up from the mining ponds in Randville in da UP... Weather was incredible. Saturday... My dad, brother, and I decided to hit the west brach of Big Creek.. for Brookies and Browns.. The mosiquitos were the thickest I have ever experienced and I decided to pack my vest with beer and not REPELLENT!!! my brother and dad didnt' pack any as well.. I toughed it out. and caught 2 nice browns. AND A BOATLOAD OF CHUBS!!!!!!!!!!!! irritating at best.  My brother got a brookie and my dad drank all my beer and complained about the mosquitos.. It is a great stretch of river along the power lines. and I would definitely  go back there with 40% deet.. I also hit sage lake. Great bass lake that was quite busy when we first got there, only to find the fisherman coming off the lake were not having any luck.. This lake has cliffs for dropoffs and shallow bays.. We threw out crawlers and dropped them in the shallows towards dusk which produced some nice smallies.. It looked as if it was snowing with all the fuzz flying threw the air and it was clogging up my line. My 3 year old was practicing her casting and rowing right over my brothers' line every time.. I had a good laugh over it.. So I have no complaints I left taking home the prize for the most fish, as we always compete. and my dad finally acknowledged that I was a d@$n good fisher(woman) and was proud of me.. that was the best prize of all.

Sounds like you had a great weekend. I had to prepare for my oldest son's Birthday party which was Sunday. We had great weather for a change and he really enjoyed his party. This weekend we are leaving to go south for a wedding, then all my weekends should be free again( thankfully ) I really need to wet a line. I have been living vicariously through all your reports so keep them coming. I can't wait to add a few of my own......

Sounds like a good time everyone, glad to hear.  I stayed around my preg. wife the weekend close to home with a cell phone, still no new child yet.  I did manage a couple of nice outings in my kayak.  As of yesterday the gills where back on the beds due to the warm up, can see that there gonna scatter again with this windy cold weather today.  Updated my journal with pics of those days too if any one cares to brouse.

Stay safe with tight lines of course

Walleye fishin' on the Saginaw Bay is starting to settle in, the usual summer places are starting to turn on. We had a good day on the water Sunday. Pics and details are in my Journal.

Glad to have all that "family stuff" behind me (divorced and retired) well except for the occasional grand kids birthdays and the family holidays. No honey do's or complainin' about too much fishin' or huntin' though.  ::)   Now if I could just get this old body to work like it used to.   :P

Well beer and horseshoes filled most of my weekend but I did go to Erie Saturday mornin. Only got 3 walleye but did discover a new way of fishing. I put a spinning reel on a 9ft med/light fly rod. Boy I thought  I had a steel head on when that 5 lb sheepheap hit. Even the walleye where a blast when they ripped the crawler harness. You guys should give a fly rod a shot when trolling for Eyes.... FUN STUFF
