Fall trout ponds - how to?
« on: Oct 21, 2013, 05:57 PM »
I've never, at least in my adult life, fished a trout pond this time of the year. Cant really remember if I have or not. I have plenty of luck from spring to mid-summer, but don't have any idea what I should try this late.

Anyone willing to give up anything? Depth? Lures?

Fall is just as easy as spring in my book.
I'm not sure if you know or not. After the 15th of this month. We are limited to special regs water. Trout is closed in most of the state.
Bust out the regs book. A few ponds/lakes are open until November. Certain rivers never close.
On lakes that trout can be fished all year. Most streams in and out can be fished for trout all year up to the 1st impassible (by fish) barrier.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

Smokey, I used to guide for Brookies in the fall in Canada, some anglers just love the fall spawning colors. Most of the trout were in shallow (below 55 degree water) and were forging for young of the year crawfish. We used 1/16 oz. jigs with a pumpkinseed 2 inch plastic body. Some green bodies also work. We also carried mepps spinners and worms. The fish should be in close either spawning or close to it. Great advice about checking the regulations !!  Good luck !!

Thanks for the tips, ecolt.

And yeah, the particular pond I was thinking about trying is open til the end of November. In fact, I wasn't even considering trying it, but I just happened to be flipping through the regs and saw it was still open.

trout are always eating; they are worse then people. I have been getting trout this entire week with dry flies and nymphs; some of the biggest fish of the season. It's a great time to fish since the water is at an ideal temp. around 53 deg. and the fish are still rising to late day hatches. Bigger baits like buggers and streamers   this time of year will get you those bigger fish. Give it a go; you won't regret it! :) :) :)

Unfortunately, my motor battery has kicked the bucket from running the lights up at camp the last few weeks. Won't take I charge. Looks like my trolling season has come to an end. I'll have a much better chance at justifying the price of a new battery to the wife in the spring.

I think motors were banned on the lake we chatted about just this year. I'm not 100%, but I do know it's been discussed. I do know it's a pretty easy paddle.
