Cats
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:54 PM »
First time out this year last night /this morning for my son & I after some big cats. They were going WILD after fresh Goldeye!!!!!!!!! First line in @ 3:15am & 1st one landed by 3:26. Even had 2 double headers, 1 which was 2 MA which was UNREAL as both made huge runs up & down the river. Still can't believe we kept from crossing lines. New LED headlamps I made worked great & sure helped. Up until 6:30, never went more than 10 minutes without a bite & usually every 2-3 minutes. Lots though that would just make one real wicked hit then gone. Only ended up with 10, 3 that were MA. Ranged from 26" - 36 1/2". No bites after 7am. Not the most in a night we've got but maybe the most fun.
Will try post some pics when my son sends them.

Yes, they sure do put up a fight. Be prepared for some sore arms after 20-25 minute battles; multiple times a day/night.
If you want to get out some time let me know. Don't worry, I've got extra gear if you don't have the right setups. Just so you know though, I prefer during the week. Not that I won't go on weekends, I just avoid it if at all possible.

Nice fish!  I normally fish the Red north of the locks at Lockport.  Just got a new boat (new to me, that is...*grin*)...so no more fishing from shore if I can help it.  I normally use the equivalent of a hockey stick and braided cable when I fish for the big cats.  My favourite rig is a 7ft, medium heavy Rhino rod loaded up with 40lb spiderwire or fluorescent green mono, a 3oz no spin lead sinker, a plastic bead, a 1/0 barrel swivel, 50lb test mono leader 18-24" long snelled to a 6/0 circle hook.  Use your favourite bait, and hang on..*grin*.  Actually, I like this heavy technique.  It allows me to bring the fish in fairly quickly without worrying about tiring the fish out, or breaking off.  I've used lighter tackle, but man...you REALLY have to be careful or you will quickly be watching your fish break off at the boat and go swimming away with your gear in its mouth.

Actually, thats not a very heavy rig for cats. A lot of guys and the guides on the red use heavy action rods, and big baitcasters. The cat don't take a lot of runs with those, when I've fished with those it felt like using a winch,  "just keep cranking".

But I like the medium heavy action rods too, it makes you have to work alittle for the cat, while you play it more, cats are a tough fish.
