No Fish Fry
« on: Aug 18, 2011, 08:57 AM »
Hit a local private lake yesterday evening hoping to get some bullheads for supper today. Started using cut chubs from the creek here & all I was getting was perch. I decided to cut up some perch & use the peices. I immediately got hit & hooked into a heavy fish but lost him when he got into some brush. I was using #4 Gammakatsu circle hooks & they were way too small. I hooked 4 more & they turned out to be good sized channel cats. I only managed to land one & was lucky to get him in. I only caught about 6 bullheads & all but one of them were the brown bullheads with the rounded tail & from previous experience they are not good eaters. Sooo no fish fry today.

At least ya got into the channels, Jim. I wouldn't fret much though. Because, I know you'll get enough for a fish fry soon.
For the heck of askin. Is that the same private lake that had the fish kill last year?, or one of your other spots?

Same lake as the fish kill. I knew there were some channels in there but didn't think it was such a good fishery for them. I'm gonna have to fish it set up for the channels.
I think the fish kill might have taken it's toll on the bullheads.

I would have kept the perch for the fish fry (if they were bigger than dink size)

Yea, I haven't seen a bullhead outta there since before they did those treatments out there and ended up with that fishkill. Hopefully they come back in a few years. Didn't know about channels there either. Never caught one there. I guess I'll have to put a rod out for those once in a while when I'm there.

I always kept the brown bullheads in the spring in the back waters of Lake Ontario and boy were they good, all the restaurants in the area have all you can eat bullheads at that time also.
Never get excited, there's a reason for everything,I just don't know what it is!!

Yea, I grew up eatin all sorts of catfish, Skipper. As long as they come from clean water, they're delicious.
Definitely gotta keep those channel cats in mind when we're ice fishin out there with those light-lined jiggin rods, Jim. I had a few break-offs out there from some heavy fish. I was thinkin they mighta been northerns, large bass, or large bullhead. Evidently, 1 or more coulda been channel cats.

I have seen a few channels caught out there on tip-ups.
