Steelhead in the pisqatacua?
« on: Jul 31, 2016, 12:04 PM »
I went out this morning trolling with a buddy on winni, and I was asking him about his work (he's a bio with the marine division of F&G), and he told me about a gentleman he interviewed this week who showed him a picture of a steelhead/rainbow which he had caught in the piscataqua. The guy was telling my friend that he was so excited that UNH was starting to stock steelhead in NH.... My friend was aware of UNH's steelhead program which is used to grow steelhead for table fair/ restaraunts, but was pretty sure that they were not stocking fish. This fish was caught in the area around the shipyard.

The fish was around 18" and looked like the pills bury dough boy apparently. I realize this fish was probably just a stocky that ventured out into the big lake, and that rainbows/ steelhead are one in the same genetically. I was wondering if anyone else had ever heard about, or caught one in the river? I have heard of Browns, and Brookies taking a liking to the salt, but not any rainbows at least around here.

I believe you might have better luck in the tributaries rather than the main river. All of the rivers entering that watershed are stocked with rainbows, browns, and brook trout., so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I saw the fish, definately stocky looking in my opinion. I've caught Brookies, Browns, and bows in the Pscat by way of accidental bycatch on teasers above my lures. All appeared nothing more than trout that washed over the dams and headed down river.
It’s not being Cocky if you can back it up.

It is understood that fishing licenses, gas, bait, etc., all cost money, but try not to let a limit of trout be your only gauge for success. – Ben Nugent, (NH F&G) Regional Fisheries Biologist
