Gill fishing 5/26/20
« on: May 26, 2020, 05:54 PM »
Got out this morning for the first time this year in search of some crappies.  No luck.  So I switched to try and catch some gills.  Caught this limit using crickets. I was anchored in 22 fow.  Surface water temp was 69 degrees.  Largest was 9 3/4.  Several over 9.

Nice work! My boy and I got to my favorite bluegill lake and brought home 2 doz. Found them shallow getting ready to do their thing. Can't wait to fry some up tomorrow!

Way to go Prince. You can alwys find them deep with your crickets.

Nice mess princecraft. I personally stay off the beds. Like shooting fish in a barrel. No fun for me, would rather chase them. And for the simple reason once they see my boat they start to shake

good mess nice job on the switch up. :clapping:

im not sure there is a pattern out deep.  they seem to roam 8-12ft down in my waters. I just cruise around till I see suspended fish and drop on them. I do have areas of lakes that hold them more often than not though. I don't start out deep till july though most years.
Hey fishhogger what kind of electronics do you use ?

just a hook unit on my boat.

you don't need much of a finder though.  most of my gill fishing takes place off my parents pontoon.  being portable, a lot of times it was just a flasher.  all I need to see are marks suspended to give it a try.  like op showed they usually bigger fish.

I troll them up(lil cranks or spinners) or cane pole n quill fish them.  just depends on what I feel like that day.

I also find 8-11 am to be my best time.  it works all day though pretty good.

Good deal thanks for the tips , I have a lowrance elite 5 and don't much care for it.  I feel like it doesn't mark smaller groups of fish as well as it does suspended stripers or some perch on the bottom. U guess I need to jsut start stoping and trying certain marks and see what happens

the camo bottom we painted on your boat should throw them off for a few weeks though. ;)
I'm surprised some enterprising individual hasn't created a boat wrap that looks like a school of minnows.  that would draw em in

What about dropping a bunch of small mirrors on a string or a pole for the night bite.  You have me thinking now.  Or a small disco ball   HHHHMMMMMMM

True... definitely no need to get fancy for the mid summer bluegill bite.  When they're scattered and suspended I use my finder more to figure out how deep the fish are so that I need to know what size sinkers to use with my spinners while I slow troll.  I usually don't mark larger concentrations of bluegill until later in the year.  On lakes that don't have a deeper thermocline, cane poles are a fantastic tool.
Catching the lunkers of tomorrow today!
