Ahhhh, that pic brings me back to my logging days in college.

I dont think they make a lot of money, but what a fun job the original loggers had. Go out cut and haul logs until dark and eat like there is no tmrw. Those guys had a to be some strong people. I always wished I could go back and spend a couple of days with the loggers who used horses, two man saws, and were river rats.
That's ok, in a nother year or 2 the deer will have lots of new growth and raspberry plants to eat.
thats what it looks like on the farm i deer hunt right now...theyre tearin it up something awful
That is the specific reason the DEQ clear cuts certain areas. They usually do 30-40 acre sections here and there. Young forests "support the most creatures best" when compared to older forests. Deer, rabbit, grouse, woodcock populations should be hopping in there the next 10 years or so. And then it will soon fade off into a middle aged forest which has concurrent young forest and old forest wildlife. The only animals that kind of get pushed out from clear cutting is the bears, cougars, and bobcats. They are more "old forest" animals. Clear cutting doesn't technically kill the trees there either. I know almost all broadleaf tree stumps send out new shoots. The one area by me had poplar shoots growing to 7ft after one summer. After two years its hard to walk through there. The forest floor is then open to sunlight to let new seeds grow also...and eventually pines will come back. And almost all animals like a soft bud on some young trees.

  • I'd rather be at camp.
PM I went to college for Natural Resources management. It really helped me manage for wildlife after I graduated.  I like to keep a big raspberry patch growing by my tree stand,. It really attracts the deer.

Thats awesome, how close were they? I was picking berries one time on a trail and I jumped up a fairly mature fawn. I froze in my tracks and then ducked. The deer was so curious of what spooked him, he walked back to about 8 yards from me to try and get a look. He just stood there looking around for about 3 mins, then slowly worked his way off into the woods

Just a little update. I havnt really been able to get out fishing because of finishing up school and working everyday. Ill get some good water time in soon. Well I quickly discovered a small drainage ditch creek right next to my work. I also discovered some small carp in there. So when I get off of work, I walk to the creek and fish for 15 mins before it gets dark. Im 3/3 trip to fish ratio. batting 100% not monsters biggest was 20 inches.
Also went out to a trout stream on sunday and got caught out in a thunderstorm but managed two nice browns. I also had a tournament worthy bass take a few smacks at my bait but then he refused. I will get out next weekend for sure. Good Luck yall

Made it out this weekend and did a lot better on the river than I did on the lake. Bows were hitting good, and I probably landed 15 or so trout. Bluegills were just finishing up spawning with not much size to them. I couldn't locate the big ones. Water was very warm.

I warmed up with a few trout on worms and then went to a mepps. First rainbow I had broke my #0 mepps off and 4lb test. I had to switch to a #1 which was just as productive.

I was watching this one in a hole for a while. He kept hitting the surface but would avoid my worm. Eventually I got him to take it.

I then finished my limit off with a beautiful brown. I wish the camera would have caught his color better. It makes him look pretty light.

dinner

Then back at the house we had some active spawning sunfish who I snapped some pictures of. IF you guys get to watch fish spawn up close like this its really neat. The way they lay eggs, the female just takes off and the the male guards against all intruders by flaring his gills out.
yes a little fish porn

Ill be out on a week long vacation starting next Saturday. I have a pretty bad injured ankle and hopefully that wont impair me from getting to some good spots
