To you few Loran-C users left...
« on: Apr 09, 2010, 10:00 PM »
Most of us, even if we don't use a GPS know what it is all about. Some may not know, that before GPS there was Loran-C, a land based system that has been scheduled to be turned off for years (after a 20 year run). I had thought that no one used Loran any more except for some crusty old commercial fishermen, but I was giving a seminar last week on GPSs and one of the attendees told me he still used loran and had two new machines sitting in boxes "Just in case"... Well this is costing us a bucket load of money and now on February 18th 2010 the signals will be turned off for good and your lorans will no longer work! So remember, no matter how good the price is on eBay don't buy one! If anyone needs more info on changing their "TDs" to Lats and Longs, I will be happy to point you in the right direction.

I'd hope they keep the Lorans in mothballs rather than get rid of them. It's not too hard to picture the satellites being taken out as the first step in a military attack.

In war time, Lorans could be take out with the stuff you get at radio shack...
