Here's an ornament I made for my Bride.

From a piece of apple wood I've had laying around for a couple years. Really pretty stuff.

Nice Bob.
Is it easier to turn a green piece of wood or a dried one??

Every stick is different Dom. This apple is pretty seasoned having been inside for a couple years. That said it turns like a dream. Solid continuous ribbons flying through the air. That's characteristic of green woods as well like ash, maple, walnut and some others. Green wood turns easier than seasoned wood in most cases.

Ash when it's seasoned is a bear to turn. The wood fibers seem to shatter into fine dust no matter how sharp the tool. It finishes like glass with a good bit of effort. Green...ash is super easy and stable to turn.

Seasoned cherry is another that's really fun to turn. Easy to get a smooth, almost polished surface right off the tool. Green it's kind of gummy and hard to control in my experience.

I think that's part of what I like the most about turning wood on the lathe. No 2 pieces are ever the same.

Thanks! Fun to get into the holiday spirit turning these little ornaments.

There's another really nice one on the lathe. Took a break for the day. Gonna watch a Clint Eastwood western, have a beer and some cheese and triscuits.

A fine way to finish a Saturday afternoon.

Just finished this one for my Bride's collection.

It's turned from Mopane. A South African heartwood. Super dense stuff. Very pretty .

I took it from 100 grit all the way to 2000 grit then to rottenstone and pumice. Really fun to watch the finish progress. It's pretty flawless.

Yea they are Bob.
He designed and built a vacuum chamber/pump system that impregnates the wood with colored epoxy which stabilizes and protects the wood.
Next time Iím out your way Iíll bring my rod he built.  Itís really cool ship.

Some are wood (stabilized burl), some are pressure cast resin, some are hybrids which are part wood part resin.

Interesting! I'd like to see your vacuum setup if you feel like putting up some pics.
