I went smelt fishing yesterday. It was difficult to catch it. Because bite is very little and I had to hook it by intuition. Garminís panoptix system is excellent! I could watch school of smelt on the bottom. On the screen it is the yellow green part below. Iím looking forward to use it in ice fishing.

Smelt fishing is very popular in Japan. The Japanese smelt is very small. About 2-4 inches.
We usually use an electric reel using AAA batteries. Terminal tackle is small 5-7 hooks with 4-5g sinker.
Bait is maggot cutting it in half. We enjoy very small bite thatís on rod tip.

Niru, are the rigs you use similar to a sabiki rig?

Yes itís similar to sabiki rig and hook is very small. Its length is about 80cm.
