Silver Lake die off
« on: Jun 24, 2018, 11:14 PM »
From the Silver Lake Association:

FYI - The SLA would appreciate help with this matter.

“DEC is investigating the dead fish at Silver Lake. They would be helped by having a semi-live fish of any kind (e.g., half dead, swimming upside down). If you can safely secure such a fish, net it and place it in a ziplock bag and put in your refrigerator (DO NOT FREEZE). Then call 716-372-0645, tell them who you are, that you are at Silver Lake, identify what you have, and they will arrange for pick up. DEC’s current thinking is that the dead fish are associated with spawning stress and/or low oxygen levels. So, it is safe to eat fish you already have or about to catch.”

I have fished silver a few times this year and as recently as last week without seeing a die off.  Just one floating bullhead. I wonder what’s up? I know my catch, unfortunately,  has definitely not contributed to a die off.

Who reported the fish die off?  How many dead fish were found and when?  Early spring there will be dead fish floating and they are the fish that ice fishermen through back that don't make it and get frozen in the ice from underneath.  Late Spring or Summertime dead fish are another story.

You can put those questions in an email to the address in your quote.

Saw a few fish like that on Skaneateles this year after the north end surface temp went from mid 60's to the 40's after a strong south wind. Probably stress.
