Question; Have you ever
« on: Aug 20, 2018, 11:51 AM »
Have you ever released a fish that you knew had a shot at state or world record?
I’ve been seeing some photos of really big stripers lately 70+ . Then I thought if these were released that record would get broken again for sure.
It has to be the same all species. Let hear yours.
Went to Florida and the guide said you can eat as many 3 lbs bass as you like but anything over 6 lbs goes back. 10s he said he wouldn’t lift out of the water in summer.
I did hear local guy let 68# striper go so there is hope for them.

My son released a muskie that was close to, if not bigger than, the state record.

I have released fallfish that were close to, if not bigger than, the state record.

RI state record Carp and Hickory shad and CT state record Skate. I was too young to drive with the carp and had no idea about the Hickory Shad or skate until after the trip when we looked into it a bit closer.

The best i can do is say that I released a fish close to if not bigger than my PB.
Never has a state or world record holder graced me with its presence.

My son caught an 18 inch crappie but it was caught in the "catch and release" section of the Hudson River, NY   so back it went.

I did personally see the  NY State Record (at the time) Steelhead  caught in Black Hole, Salmon River NY  back in 1984.

Maybe and No.  In the mid 80's, shortly after hybrid striped/white bass were introduced to Indiana waters, each new week brought a new record. I spent an evening trading what was probably a short lived state record with another fellow fishing next to me. We took turns landing each other's fish at the Falls of the Ohio. A school of wipers had pinned baitfish against the rocks and it was pure mayhem. The "wipers" were in the 22-24 inch range and heavy bodied.  At the time the record was in the 5 pound range and climbing.  We probably caught a dozen large fish between us. I will never forget the weather. It was freezing rain/sleet and, it took great effort to warms one's hands when it was his turn for another shot. It was also the night IU beat Syracuse on Keith Smart's buzzer beater in the NCAA BB tournament. We were visiting my rabid IU fan in-laws who, in spite of my promise to be back for the game never missed me.  I got back in time to see the last 3 minutes of the game...

Years later, when the record was in the high 18's I caught a big wiper below Norway Dam.  My buddy's digital scale
clocked it as 18-3.  As it was July and the water was too warm for the fish to survive, I gave it to fellow who was meat fishing.  I first made him promise to take it to a familiar bait shop and have it weighed. I told him to tell the owners that that crazy school teacher caught it and that I would call that evening to confirm the weight.  When I called that evening, she confirmed the weight as a little over 14 #s.  When I told her about my buddy's digital readout her reply was. "That's probably accurate. It still had its head and guts then!"  It didn't matter, later that day some guy brought one in that went 19-4...

Oh man, that must have hurt. At least someone smashed it a bit later, haha

Ive been through many phones and the picture may be lost forever but had I thought about the carp state record i  at the time I wouldve at least got it officially weighed. i will try and dig that picture up the thing was ridiculous...

Ma state record pickerel is 9.5 pounds. Longest record held in the state. We caught one over 8# ice fishing once thought we had it. I caught my pb MA bass 7.5# that day. Long ago early 90’s

Never caught anything quite that substantial so I never had to consider something like that. I think I'd still let the fish go, but I can't say with 100% certainty tbh.
