Lake Michigan Perch today... and popsicles...
« on: Jun 29, 2020, 09:36 PM »
Knew I had the morning free and debated whether fishing the back yard, going to a lake outside LaPorte or hitting the big lake.  I had seen something on facebook, just before I went to bed that the perch were around Portage.  Got up at 4 and put the Lund on the Suburban and headed to Richie's for minnows.  Called my 92 yo friend at 5:30 AM and told him I was headed to the launch and God bless him, he told me give him 20 minutes and he would meet me.  So, we set out from Portage about 6 AM and headed north of the donut in 40' of water.  Aimed the I Pilot for the donut at a slow pace and moved along to 20' of water.  Picked up 7 average 9-10" perch on first pass using traditional crappie type rig with minnows on the bottom.  Did the same pass again and got another 3.  Headed east to state beach and got a few in 24' of water and knew I was running out of time.  I had a date at noon with a 5, a 3 and a 1 year old to babysit and hang out.  Today would be a great day for popsicles. Headed back toward Portage and saw a floatilla in front of Ogden Dunes, just west of the mouth of the ditch.  Moved shallow and let the south wind push me out to about 30' before returning shallow to do it again.  Ended up with two limits of nice 9-13" perch and was lucky enough to run into a guy stranded in his boat along the pier in the ditch on the way back to the launch.  Towed him to Doynes and then headed home.  Great day on the lake and even though it was really warm, watching the passion and enjoyment of my 92 yo friend made me grateful and hopeful that I will have a similar approach to life the rest of my days...   Get out and enjoy the lake, your friends, your life and you just can't beat a popsicle with that gang of little people...

Will the light north winds effect the bite Thursday since it will be just the first day

It shouldnt, it may push them around a little bit. But they wont go far.

The weather (wind) is changing every day. So the fish are being a little funky, stick to it. Keep your bait moving you should get them. Now, if we could get 2-3 days of steady weather and the same dominant winds, its going to go bonkers out there.

Now talking winds. I hate, east and northeast winds for fishing. Any fresh water species in the midwest. Lol. Sounds crazy but i trully believe in "east is the least" i watched it shut them down today, again.
