Nesting Redwing Blackbirds on one of my ponds
« on: May 22, 2023, 08:35 PM »
I haven't seen a Great Blue Heron after the fish in that pond since the a pair of Redwinged Blackbirds took up housekeeping. May be just a coincidence, but I do know they will drive off an Osprey as a pair would harass one every time it showed up at my biggest pond in the past. Osprey finally gave up in frustration.

The clump of cattails the nest is hidden in:

Amazing what kind of things birds can construct. I've got a Baltimore Oriole nest hanging from a twig just off my back porch . She provides entertainment with my morning coffee.

Sadly raccoons got into the nest and apparently took the young right out of it as the nest is now empty and tipped sideways a few weeks ago.  I know they weren't far enough along to fly out. And sure enough, within a few days the Great Blue Heron and Osprey were back. Next year if they nest again I will put an electric fence up to keep the raccoons out.

I know it's the way of nature but it still pisses me off.

At least the coons are staying out of the garden due to an electric fence.

Yup. I don't think you can get much for the hides anymore right? I seem to remember years ago Russia was one of the biggest buyers, but I could be wrong. My dad ran a trap line back in the 80's and absolutely loved it until his fingers couldn't take the cold anymore.

My neighbor may have eliminated them. He shot 3 or 4 in his garden.
