General Fishing Discussion / Re: Anybody think this spring has been windier than usual on the water?
« Last post by rivereddy on May 12, 2024, 02:57 PM »I coached high school and jr high baseball for about for about 15 years until I retired from teaching
in 2014. During that time I kept a log of the conditions in practices and games. Toward the end of
my coaching career I can say that, yes, conditions were indeed much windier than when I began.
About the same time a decision was made by the state governing body to switch over to a ball with
a softer center. These lacked the "carry" that traditional balls had. A solid "fly" with the older balls
would follow a more or less reverse parabolic arc. One had to coach his outfielders not to run in as
the ball was likely to carry over their heads. The newer balls would initially take off like like the
traditional ones but then lose energy quickly like a badminton birdie. As they fell, the wind played
havoc with their trajectory. Depending on the wind, some shots cleared the fence for a home run.
The wind literally blew them out of the park. I also saw headwinds knock potential homers out
of the sky for an easy putout.
I canoe, therefore the wind blows....
