Thanks for the insight everyone, a lot of good points-

I don't necessarily expect/ want to just catch fish with a guide, but more want it to be a learning experience. Those are two interesting points stripernut and lowaccord coming from both a guide and fishing enthusiast standpoint. It must be a lot of pressure sometimes as a guide when the fish (and clients) aren't cooperating.

I've done guided trips before and it does suck to spend a lot of money and not catch much but like mentioned before it's hard to get all of the planets to align no matter how experienced you are. I've been a "Youtube student" for a long time and I do like figuring it out myself. In person I think it definitely would help a lot even if we don't catch anything.

I just want to mainly learn how to catch the more elusive trout as I grew up a bass guy which at times of the year will hit anything you buzz past them.

Now lets hope the rain holds off a bit so the flows stay manageable.

I got out fishing on the North Hoosic in North Adams for about 45 minutes after work but before dinner this evening.

It was mostly cloudy and about 65 degrees out.

After starting just below the entrance to the Natural Marble Bridge State Park, and not getting any action, I headed downstream to the sandbar island below the roll dam, and waded from the southern end of the island, past Elm Rock, and then (after clambering onto shore on the opposite bank) down below the Eclipse Mill dam.

While I didn't get any strikes above the Eclipse Mill dam, I caught a 14" rainbow (after a sharp but brief struggle) just below it, and then hooked into another fish about 100 yards further downstream.

This second fish put up one helluva fight, and after finally landing it, I was surprised to learn that it was "only"  15" rainbow.

I'm pretty sure this was the same fish (since I caught it in the same spot) as the one that had the sheer effrontery to let go of my hook after I was thoughtful enough to place a tender morsel of nightcrawler before it this past weekend.

Needless to say, it was gratifying to wreak my vengeance on such an ungrateful miscreant.

Duly vindicated, I climbed out of the water, and walked back to my car before heading home for a well deserved rest after my prodigious labors.

Looks like a great time!! I use to do a trip back in the day.  We would keep a couple one of the days and grill them over an open fire at our campsite.  Still my favorite way to cook trout.

Newton county.

My wife's first teaching job was in North Judson. I think that is east of you? She's originally from Whiting, Indiana.
