Had a trailer on Hamlin Lake at North Bayou Resort in the 60's. Great times and great fishing. Back then DNR would not stock walleyes because Lake Association would pull water down in the fall 2'-3' to save the docks and break walls. In spring when walleyes would run up the Sable River to spawn,  they could only go as far as the dam. The Lake Association got permission from DNR to go below the dam and net walleyes coming out of Lake Michigan and throw them above dam into Hamlin Lake. Talk about good walleye fishing!!!!!
Always had good crappie, bluegill, bass and northern.
The good old days!!

The biggest bass ive caught up that way are on atrificials.  Have done plenty with bait.  Would recommend fresh chunk if (and sometimes they do) turn off from whole live baits.  When I say chunk I mean half a herring, preferrably the head portion.

I wouldnt worry about the catfish and trash fish.  I use to catch them early season on bloodworms wrapped in cheese cloth and that worked great.  Big chunks should be left alone.
