Rod Help
« on: Mar 23, 2009, 08:54 PM »
I need help with choosing a freshwater rod.

The species I'm targeting are trout and panfish.  I'll be float fishing and using jigs/crank baits from the shore of ponds/rivers/lakes.

What length and power should I use?  Any particular rod recommended?

Thanks in advance.

I like a 6 ft medium light action rod for stream trout fishing which is great for panfish too. Used to use mostly 5 or 5 1/2 ft light rods for my ultralight setup but the 6ft will give you better casting distance and will play larger trout and bass much better if you get into them

I have a rod that I like for that stuff....

St. Croix Premier
6'6'' Light Power
Fast Action
SC2 Graphite
4-8 lb line
1/16-5/16 oz lure

It is not so super fast that it rips your bait off when you cast, but it isn't noodly or whippy either. I have gone through dozens of crappie rods before I found this one. I pair it up with a Shimano Symetry 750 and 4lb Berkley Trilene XT.

http://www.fishusa.com/St-Croix-Premier-Spinning-Rods_p.html It wont smash the piggy bank either, Fish USA has it for $90.

Cool, I was looking at the premier.

6ft sounds good for the rivers and I won't lose distance at the ponds.  Light power sounds good, just in case I get a bass on.

Thanks for the help.

Is a Shimano Sahara any good?
