Topwater Pike Video
« on: May 22, 2010, 11:32 PM »
As promised I have got my top water pike video done.
The video was shot several years ago in mid August on the Whitefish River that feeds into the Smith Arm of Great Bear Lake in the North West Territories.
No giant pike unfortunately as they move out into the main lake in late July.
Plenty of high flying action though on my custom made Cigar Tube topwater baits.
So sit back and enjoy five minutes of fun!!!!

Dave, thank you for another enjoyable video there is something special about top water fishing. The thought that at any moment a fish could break the surface .

I noticed a lot of misses, what is the hook-up percentage of that bait?

Great video, fun to watch.

Yeah, a lot of times the pike are too fast for their own mouths.  Often time they knock the lure instead of biting it.  I almost never catch one on the very first strike.  I think that perhaps a natural forage would often speed up just before the moment of attack and the pike are overestimating the lure.  I don't really know if they're just antagonizing their forage.

It's almost the same when I use a buzzbait.  The first bite is usually a miss, but usually short for me.  I usually catch'm on the second pass.

Great video, fun to watch.

About 90%.
That's the best part. I don't have to take the stinky, snotty things off the hook that way!!!!
I really hate it when guests insist on bringing out their stick baits with three trebbles on them.   ::)
I tell them no problem, but you get to take your own fish off the hooks then.
They catch one or two fish and put them away.

For me the best part of pike fishing is the hit, so who cares if they get off.  ;)

The biggest reason for the crappy hook up rate is the fact that the baits only have one single barbless hook.   ;D
