So the Salmon on the east end of Lake Ontario have just beat me down...my last five trips have resulted in one break off and one dropped fish. I am stumped, humbled and baffled. Never have I struggled this bad and I refuse to drive to Oswego where the fishing has been pretty consistent. So I know a couple guys that have big dreams as myself to learn how to consistently target the Big Lake Ontario Eyes. We joined forces last night and put our tactics and ideas together and had a blast. We started out before dark working an area we all agreed was a must starting point. The trip started with a few bass that made a mess with some of our spreads. After the sun set we trolled our way to a different location and right about the time we started to discuss that the Big Eyes have eluded us yet again...a rod bent over and started thumping pretty good. Jake P grabbed the rod and in came a 26" 7 pound beauty. We got the rods back out, snapped some pics and a celebratory cheers with a Busch beer...we made a loop and headed back towards the first spot, as we made a pass nearly right where we started in the evening another rod went...Cheeks grabbed the rod and battled a 30.5" 10 pound beast. Pictures just don't do these Big lake eyes any justice. I have been fortunate to handle a few over the years and it never gets old. I personally learned a lot last night sharing tactics and experimenting with different combinations. I like to normally release these big fish but they were tore up in the gills pretty bad after inhaling the baits. They hit the cooler...a little Mercury in moderation never really hurt anyone! Great outing for sure! Screw Salmon!
