Selective Hearing
«
on:

I’ve been noticing (lately) that my Bride has even more selective hearing than I do. I can say a number of different things to her regarding my activities …etc…she inevitably makes me repeat it at least twice.
We’re both getting a bit older. Her 73… me 71, and our hearing ain’t what it used to be... but it seems a learned response. If I’m relating the days activities she makes me repeat it a couple times., If I say, “Dinner’s Ready”…. Her hearing appears perfect.
Maybe it’s just me.

I had to get hearing aids for that reason. Years of racing and machinery led to them. I found asking people twice after they said something a bit rude. I’m doing better with them now.

I don’t know about that Larry. I have tinnitus from years of air tools and shooting ( didn’t know better). Some days it can be especially disruptive. On average I deal with it.
It’s a blessing and a curse.
Sometimes it’s a good bail out. Like when my bride suggests we go to my Sister-in -law’s for a family gathering. ( I won’t go into that)
OYE!

My bride gets so mad at me because I can’t hear and won’t do anything about it.. She’s sick of having to tell me things 2 and 3 times.
And if we’re in a crowd it’s really bad and I become very loud just to hear myself…
Way to many loud concerts……

I started wearing hearing aids about 30 years ago. Between shooting, SCUBA diving and working in telephone switch rooms my hearing was getting real bad. They are not cheap but with todays tech they can be programmed for just about any type of hearing loss one might have. Big plus is you can be VERY selective with what you hear by removing them....lol....h2l

My wife keeps telling me I need bearing aids be cause I always ask her to repeat things. Years of working in a powerhouse have taken it's toll. My wife lost partial hearing from a visit to Niagara Falls, but she can hear a cat walk across the yard at night, but she can't hear me. Selective hearing I guess. I've been thinking about getting hearing aids more lately, it's a big expense but worth it.

I don't have selective hearing but I find it odd that my wife always starts conversations with "are you even listening to me"

Wow…I thought I was alone. At least I wear ear plugs while mowing …at home and at the course.
Wish I’d started 50 years ago.

I wear ear plugs and talk to myself.
I usually get the response I’m looking for. But, sometimes I get an argument. Makes me wonder.
