trolling speed on gps?
« on: Sep 09, 2005, 08:13 AM »
i was told that the speed on ur gps when trolling is wrong. its like 1 mph off unless u go in a straight line for a mile or more. i troll for salmon a lot, 90% of the time i just follow out the charter captins and try to go the same speed they are and its usually around the high 2s on the gps. from what i have read and have been told thats around were u want to be. i was just wondering if the gps is right or not? should i buy a speed unit?

I don't know what kind of unit you have, Nick.
With most you have to be going a certain speed for them to be accurate.
I think with mine it's 2 MPH.

Most of the newer units will accurately measure less tha 1 MPH. The reading though is measured as SOG or speed over ground. This will vary from your actual lure speed if there is any current, even in the Great Lakes. GPS speed is much more accurate though than any paddle wheel or tube method.
