Well the cat is out of the bag so I can say that Steve Day of Madison Maine caught the fish. He is going to e-mail me some pictures later, when I get home from work I should be able to post them for him. (great fisherman ~ not so good with computers)  ;D

This fish is probably a splake, not a brook trout like Jim C said. The state still needs to do an autopsy to be sure but it certainly crush's the previous record. The fish has been looked at by Scott Davis, a bio out of the Sydney office of IF&W and he said it match's the stocking records for a fish stocked as a fall fingerling in 1998.

Yes, it is the same Steve Day that has the record rainbow trout.

Sorry to drag this out like this but Steve asked me to not put this info out there until he was more sure this was a likely record.

This is also posted on some other sites that stevie posts on...

good fish

as i said to dennis elsewhere, i bet there's a few more splake in that range around right now....i wouldn't be surprised to see that record fall once or twice in the near future (nor would i be surprised to see one of these two catch it)

splake like to eat, grow and live a long time......they are made to get big, and we have more than one lake that would allow them to get big

It's funny, Steve told me the same thing. He was reviving the fish on the side of the boat when he realized there are no togue in this body of water. He made a quick call to confirm that fact and hauled it back aboard and thumped it on the head. Cripes he would have died if he would have let it go only to find out later he messed up.

My opinion, if you look closely at the features you can see it is not quite right for a togue, certainly doesn't look like the brooktrout side of the splake family either. Probably a splake, can't be 100% sure from a picture. That is why IF&W has to check the stomach. The fish is frozen now as if it is the record he wants to get it mounted. When IF&W can do the autopsy he will bring the whole thawed fish for them to check. I'm told this could take a few weeks. Like I said before between the stocking records and Scott Davis all concerned think this is a splake. Time will tell... Any way you slice it -- it's a nice fish.

Congratulations to Stevie Day.

Awesome fish no matter what and I hope it turns out to be a record!  With the clipped fin as is/report from the biologist on the clipped fin I'm willing to bet it's a splake as well.

Now that thing is out of the way. Maybe some of those perch up there can grow. j/k. Even by laker proportions that is a really nice fish. Congrats when that record gets confirmed.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.
